Warning to boaters about Boat/US insurance
If you are insured with Boat/US and have their "boat savers" policy read the fine print.
Case in point, my Bro-in-law has that on his 6 year old boat and the stern drive was recently stolen. It turns out they depreciate the value of the item 10% a year and then subtract a deductible also, so they cover virtually nothing on a boat that's a few years old. A new drive costs about 5K and he will get hit for something like 80% of that. By comparison, he checked with his home owners carrier, and for less money, the whole thing would be covered minus deductible. I checked my policy with State Farm and I would just pay the deductible also, and my policy costs less too. So much for the "boat saver" policy. Apparently they have a "yacht" policy that's better, but the name is misleading; making one think it's only for a yacht rather than a smaller boat. Dump Boat/US if you have it and get real coverage, prob for less money. George
