Back in the day of the oil crisis it was popular to replace a Muncie with a Saginaw 4-speed (Vega used a 3.31 low), drill a hole, and mount a BW overdrive from a '50s car. Of course a bunch of 400s were replaced with 350s so torque was inside limits.

Correct, I bought a set of 3.23's used on the forum and bought a new posi carrier to go with it. Car has A/C and stock 4-speed with Coker redlines (65 GTO) and car came from factory with 3.23's, so I wanted to correct it while running stock height/look tires and stock/correct Muncie trans. Nice to drive more on highway nowadays, although agreed I'm still not driving it cross-country, less than 2000 miles/year most likely (already put 1000 on in 7 months).

Definitely one of the better things I did to my car. In fact I went from 3.42 to 3.73 after I put the overdrive in. The car is spritely and I'm at 2300 RPM at 80. People recognize my car and when they see me at car shows always say to me, "You must have overdrive cause I saw you cruising at 90 MPH and it looks effortless". My car is not a daily driver but I drive it almost every day. At 80MPH and my A/C on it cruises nice and my engine temps range between 180 and 190.

Overdrive in the 68 GTO 470 CID definitely increased the driving enjoyment, usefulness, MPG.
