Starter Issue??
70 Formula 400 4 spd: Just got motor re-installed and getting closer to start up after the restoration. Issue: With NO key in the ignition, as soon as I touch the negative battery cable to the battery post, the motor begins to turn over. Assuming the ignition switch on the lower steering column was mis-aligned, I moved the ignition rod to the other extreme but again, as soon as I touched the negative battery cable to the post, the motor starts to turn over. After putting the ignition switch in each of the various positions, same result. Again, all of this is with no key even inserted it the cylinder. I guess the question is: how is 12 volts getting to the starter? Any ideas on what to try next? Thanks.

Sounds like you have the starter wires wrong, the small ones.

Could the solenoid be stuck or could the start terminal wire be pinched and shorting under the main battery terminal? I’m not sure if it’s possible but if so it could be pulling 12v off the battery which is energizing the solenoid and engaging the starter.

I would guess the battery cable end is touching the "S" terminal on the solenoid, and energizing the solenoid as soon as the battery is connected. It's not that hard to mess up, I've seen it before on many types of equipment when the lug sometimes pivots over the small "S" terminal.
It then makes it a direct connection, and bypasses all the safety switches in the system, hence the reason the NSS makes no difference. |

All set now!
Thanks for the input everyone. We did have a situation with "touching" wires so a few simple adjustments and all is good. Thanks again. Dave
