Default 68 Rocker molding extension clip

I need some schooling on the rear rocker panel extension clips. I'm seeing a couple different types, tools to install them etc.

My car has studs, not holes, not oval holes. Fisher body manual appears to show what look like plastic clips that slide onto the studs.

The clips that most places offer are back ordered anyway, and I'm not even sure if they are the right ones.

Any info on what the correct clips are, how they go on, what they look like would be appreciated. And if they clips are not available ... is anyone using an alternative method for hold the molding on? I guess I could resort to using the three bottom screws and some double sided tape.

The clips you refer to are the same for 68 and early 69. They work with the spot welded pins (like used for windshield moldings). The part number for those clips is 7775814.

I’ll see if I can pull off the molding on my LeMans which has the same pin system…

Here are some pics. These are original hardware (car was original paint when I bought it. Clips slide on from above. They are metal but there is a see through plastic spacer in back (part of the clip), I imagine it was to prevent scratching the body panel leading to rust.

Sorry about the upside down pics. They are right side up on my phone. This was a problem for years but a couple of years ago apple seemed to have fixed it but a recent iOS update this year has returned this annoying problem.

Two or three of mine were rusted away. They didn't look exactly like North's but functionally were the same, ie., one portion was riveted to the sheet metal and then it kicked out away from the sheet metal so that the turned-in edge of the trim slipped down into the gap.
Someone here fashioned some replacements from stainless and was kind enough to provide me with enough to replace my missing ones.
This is probably right up your alley dataway. Two flat pieces of stainless roughly 1-1/2" x 1/2" by 3/32" or so. The two pieces are overlapped lengthwise by about a 1/8th" or so and stitch welded. The bottom piece has two countersunk screw holes for mounting and two stainless sheet metal screws. This leaves a gap the thickness of one of the two pieces that stands off of the sheet metal and accepts the edge of the trim.

I'm sorry, I just recalled that I did have the oval holes. Otherwise, what I described above is accurate

The oval holes were punched and the studs were welded before the car was painted. But in either style the clips were added after the body was painted.

A solution if you can’t get the clips is to use the replacement screw-ion version of those studs and position them carefully so that the top flange of the molding just catches under the head of the stud directly.

By the way, some cars used Phillips wheel opening molding screws on the bottom and others used small hex head screws.

North, those appear to be exactly what I need. Thanks for taking the time to get the photos.

This does not appear to be the style Ames includes with their kits, their stuff seems to be for the oval holes.

Scott, if I can't find some, and I doubt I will be able to, I'll be in touch (soon). I'll look at the AMK catalog, so far the web searches I've done haven't turned up anything that looks like what North posted. (yes I would need six of them)

Scott, looked everywhere, and every page of the AMK catalog .. nothing close, so if you can come up with six of them I'm your Huckleberry.

Yep, I have a bag of those on hand. Would like to avoid drilling holes in my nice original quarters though. For a temp solution I'd probably just use the bottom three screws and some double sided tape ... or at least attempt to use it.

Scott often saves the day for me when it comes to parts

You could also use several layers of two sided tape to hold a metal plate that in turn would be spaced enough to act as the clip.

Another option, one I used way way back to fix the same problem is body dumdum. clean the molding and the body really well and put dumdum a bit thicker than needed and squish the molding in place. The bottom screws are doing most of the work anyhow.

How about this clip at AMK?
https://www.amkproducts.com/bulk-fas...oduct_ID=10710

Same idea but no idea if the distance from stud to retention lip is good.

Scott, those will do nicely ... I even see the right color paint

I PM'ed you about it.

I thought about those 67 clips, they would probably work, I know Ames sells them, but figured I'd give the OEM pieces a shot first.

And you know, thinking about the dumdum .. since I have some on hand ... I might squish some in there anyway .. just another bit to reduce rattling or buzzing.
