Where is this image from?
https://cruisintigers.com/art-fitzpatrick/ I don't know how I have missed this image in the past, but could someone please tell me where this image was found? Was is a dealer only promo image? Was it in Life magazine in 1970? I cannot recall seeing it before today.

Well I had thought that I had collected every version of 1970 Firebird advertising, and period magazine tests over a decade ago - but I do not recall ever coming across this one.
I saw it in a thread that got updated today, and somehow missed it when it was initially posted, and did several searches today to no avail. The URL I shared seemed to suggest it's a legit deal, but if this is a later photoshop creation, I gotta hand it to the creator - it's done well. I had understood that Art Fitzpatric did some renderings for Pontiac's in 1971, and SOME BEFORE 1970, but was unaware of him doing any 1970 Firebirds... let alone a Carousel Red Formula!?! I can see past the non-factory white line tires... but since this image is from before my time, maybe those double white lines meant they were snow tires(?); I seem to recall that single white line radial tires were common when I was growing up (born in 77; pretty much an 80's kid), and I believe they were an all season identifier - but maybe I'm wrong on that point too.

Interesting! As you know, Arts work always had his and his partners initials in one corner. Don't see that with this one. Could it have been one of their pieces that didn't get approved for public consumption but somehow "escaped" and has been madde public more recently?
As for the dual pin stripe whitewalls, yes, they were still available in early 1970. My understanding is that they could not be ordered as a specific option, but were supplied that way by one of the five tire manufacturers under codes PX6 & GR. These were F78x14" though, so would not likely have ever found their way onto a Formula. Only base and Esprit models. |

I decided to try a different search, and came up with this one - it looks a little rougher.
This one definitely has signature(s) there. The white lines appear to be covered over with darker black, but in all this one has better details, and you can clearly see this was indeed a 70 Formula.

The darker/better coloring is simply and adjustment using the computer programs - which is why you can lose some of the details as you darken/lighten and/or alter your colors. Sizing can also play a role as pixel rates can change. So the only way to know for sure is to leaf through the National Geographics for 1970 and I bet you may find it. You can get them on Ebay cheap, sometimes a complete set, or you often find them in antique stores. Here is the Iris Mist like my '67 Convertible. I believe I did alter it a tad and the color is a little lighter, but it is clearly Iris Mist in the ad. |

When I went to bible college I seem to recall leafing through many NG magazines from this period;
I could be mistaken about 1970 calender year magazines persay, but I am pretty sure I have some pre-1970 Pontiac ads, and one of my favourites was the 1976 Formula ad they placed in NG. I do believe that Life magazine had one or two different two paged ads with a base and Esprit... I'm going to do some digging through my magazines; I am still quite certain though that I have never seen this one - otherwise I would have bought duplicates and laminated one.

I am pretty sure the dual white line tires are probably leftover from Art's rendering of the Esprit or base Firebird, as those tires were available on those models of Firebirds. He probably went off the info he was supplied at the time and blacked out the lines on later renderings.

That car is the theme for my ‘70 Formula project...when it’s done my wife and I will head up to Flagstaff to recreate it...actually been using that image as my avatar for a couple years on a different (pro-touring) forum.

Great fantasy art
I like the art, but a Firebird in the snow, at the slopes even. That’s funny.
I remember barely getting up hills (or the driveway) in snowstorms back in the day (or snow coming through the holes in the floorboards). And while I never took the car to the slopes, a set of 190 Rossignols could fit windshield to rear glass. Memories Thanks

That's funny.
My Firebird, when I drove it in winter was an absolute tank - I never faced a driving situation it could not easily get over, around, or up. BFG Radial T/A's all year round too. This picture is from just after Christmas about 120 miles from home.

NICE!
I put L60 snow tires on mine in the winter. It would do great except in deep snow. The car was so low it would be like a sled after the snow got packed under it. (my 73 Formula was a trip also)

On the subject of Carousel Red birds.....I have a 70 base bird project car....that was originally Carousel Red....
Does the color add any credibility? I don't recall seeing a lot of them in this color... |
