Thanks for the information on the alternator guys. Although I was kind of hoping it was original to the car. Another member here dropped off a 1101015 to me a few weeks ago. I guess I need to check the date on it. So what range of dates will I be looking for on this car?

Anything in April or May should line up fine.
The 80 amp wouldn't have anywhere near as much take rate in the Norwood Plant as the 55 amp did. So possibly even March would pass - especially if someone just dropped one off. |

Very good fit. I would expect a very late May up to very early June built 1015 on this build.

I had a co-worker, John, that was a Chevrolet guy. However he always told me he wanted a early 2nd generation firebird. He had placed an ad in The Atlanta Advertiser for some Chevrolet parts he was selling. A guy named Scott happened to call about some of these parts and during their conversation John asked Scott if he knew of any Firebird's for sale. Scott happened to mention a red TA that had SD455 on the hood scoop. Apparently it was known to a few people at the time but no one had been able to purchase it. Scott did not know if it was a real SD455 car or not. Scott lived in the Athens, GA area. John's brother, Edward, also lived in the same area. Shortly after this conversation John and Edward were able to locate the car and also made contact with the owner. John pursued the car for some time but eventually lost interest. Finally I was on the hunt. Mike was the owner of the car. However the car sat on his friends, Larry, property. I could never get Mike on the phone. Larry was also very difficult to reach by phone and to be honest I was probably a nuisance to him. Over the years I made dozens of trips out there. Keep in mind it was usually a 4 hour round trip from where I live. Eventually I was able to make contact with Larry's son, James. James became an ally in my quest for this car. I almost gave up on this car a couple of times over the years. Seems there were too many obstacles in the way. However I got back on track after missing out on another car I had always wanted. Earlier this year James happened to reach out to me. His father Larry had recently passed away. He had been in touch with Mike and thought he was ready to part with the car. Within a few days the deal was made. Sometimes persistence pays off. |

Great effort and happy ending.
How deep are you going to tackle the car ? Do you plan to sell it at some point |

No plans to do anything with the car in the near future. Have too many projects as it is. It will just enjoy hanging out in my building with a few other Firebirds for now. Selling in the future is a distinct possibility as there is one more firebird I am pursuing. If that deal ever happens something would have to go. Where did your old '73 SD455 car end up?

It moved down to Miami in 2009 and is still there living the good life.
He went ahead and did a detailing type refinish/restoration on it right away. Would like to have it back someday Did you ever check back with PHS about any other Invoice(s) on file for your 73 SD Did it have a spare tire in the trunk ? If it did - what kind was it |

I have not gotten in the trunk yet. Either the key I have is incorrect or the lock is frozen up. Will have to pull the rear seat at some point to access the lock. |

Have not updated this thread in a while. Got the engine out and luckily found no catastrophic damage. Block is going to be able to stay standard bore.

And it has the "Golden Starter!" That "1108436 1B11" was part of the special batch of starters made for the upcoming 1973 SD cars in 1971. Simply amazing that it is still present and bolted to the engine.

So were the 1B11 starters used on 1971 and 1972 455HO engines? And the left-overs were used on the 1973 SD455?
I have a 1B11 436 starter that someone is trying very hard to buy. I need one for an early April 1972 build 1972 Lemans Covertible 455HO. Approximately what date code should be on my 72 455HO. |

No cracks on the exhaust manifolds ?
Not even the passenger side ! Dammmm Do believe that mileage is actual. You sure have good luck with old engines |

I suspect that Pontiac ended up with a lot of 1B11 436 starters due to production volumes being lower than expected in 1972.
