3-Point Belts for Rear Seats?
Apparently there was a 3-point belt for rear seats on 70-73 cars. I had a look at the rear deck on my 77 Trans Am, and there appear to be 2 unused holes there to accommodate the retractor for a 3-point belt, however they don't look reinforced at all.
Is it possible to retrofit 3-point belts on 74-81 cars? Other than the seatbelt, what would be required to do this? |

Take a look at the Fisher Body manual (Chapter 15, Seats) for your year. Detailed instructions for the rear shoulder belts.
This is from CRG. (Camaro Research Group) Although written for the First Gen Camaro, the basic information crosses over for both A and F body cars. http://www.camaros.org/seatbelt.shtml

I'm not seeing any reference to 70-73 rear shoulder belts on that page, yet I know they existed. The picture I posted above is from a 71. And reproduction rear shoulder belts for 70-73 models exist. The Fisher body manual I have (which is for a 77) doesn't mention rear shoulder belts, but I don't have one for 70-73 models.
I'd like to retrofit rear shoulder belts into my 77, but I'd like to know what reinforcements might be missing that I need to add, first. |

71 with a custom rear side glass???
Pics in this link of a 70 with rear shoulder belts. Can't really tell how they attach. This came from a thread in the 70-73 Firebird and TA tech section. https://www.hemmings.com/classifieds...d/2606013.html Clay |

Huh, you're right. That's a 1st gen. But yeah, the pictures you linked to prove my point. This isn't just a 1st gen thing.
Those ones appear to cinch manually rather than have a retractor, but I bet the upper attachment point is the same. These are what I suspect are the attachment points: And somehow it has something to do with these brackets: But without knowing if any further reinforcements are required, it's hard to tell how safe it would be. |

The early 3-points were an option, were still lap and sash with no retractor and used 2 belts for each. The reinforcement was part of the kit and also available as as a GM accessory.

This hole, whatever it's original purpose, seemed to disappear from cars mid-production which is why they only list them belts for certain years as a direct install. They equate drilling a hole to the kit not fitting. |
