Default Engine height problem

Hello all. I have an unusual problem I'm trying to figure out. Maybe someone can give some advice. I purchased a 72 TA years ago that didn't have its original drivetrain. It had a later year Pontiac 400 engine and T22 tranny. I had a 71 455HO installed with an M22 to try to bring it back to stock. After the engine was installed the shaker scoop is sitting lower than before. By about 2 - 2.5 inches. Yes, it is the same stock 72 air cleaner and hood scoop. I am dumbfounded by this. Any ideas? Thanks

Were the stock motor mounts from 70-73 used? ( Frame and engine side?)
Which intake are you using? Stock was Aluminum, but a performer is same height.
Could be you have the wrong air cleaner base too, BUT
My bet is the engine mounts.

Thanks for the reply. I’ll have to check those mounts. Everything on the engine is stock. Intake, air cleaner, etc.

Humor this please:

if the car didn't have it's original drivetrain, how can you say it's the stock aircleaner?

If you don't know what to look for, the air cleaner is easy to get wrong - and then the air cleaner hits the hood.

I have understood that all aftermarket intakes sit a bit high, some more than others;
Some people insist on running different carbs with adapters, then once again, the air cleaner hits the hood...
I say that to iluustrate how often this seems to happen.
Pictures might help too.

2-2.5 inches is a lot. If it were the mounts, I'd think that the oil pan would be resting on the crossmember. It's been a long time since I've put on mounts so I don't know if it's possible to install them upside down or not.

after re-reading the very first post, I recant my prior question.

if it 's that low, it seems to me that the frame side mount may very well be the culprit.

My new guess is that it has a 1977 shaker assembly on it. Base and shaker., If engine mounts are correct.

Hi fellas, thanks for the replies. I think either the mounts or the side frame mounts are the culprit. Thinking the mounts. Spoke to someone at Ames and was told the mounts are specific for 70-74.: Sending pics to my friend who is storing the car for me so that he can make a comparison.

The drivetrain was not correct but the intake, air cleaner and scoop are correct and were being used. I installed a 71 HO block and used correct 7F6 heads and intake as well as correct exhaust manifolds for the car. I’ll let you guys know what’s up once i figure it out. You guys are great. TY.

I’ll be putting this car up for sale once I sort this one out.

A few years ago I compared several different brands of the aftermarket engine mounts and posted info in a thread. Height was one of the differences and if you scroll down a few posts in the thread there's pics and explanation about height differences of them. http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=828499

I don't think the height differences would drop the engine anywhere near 2 1/2" though.

A photo or three would have likely answered this on second reply.
