original vs repop (70 Formula RA brackets)
Many years ago I bought the reproduction air cleaner support brackets for 1970 Formula's with the RAIII engine.
I was immediately taken back by how flimsy these were. I have since read that the originals were sturdier. Has anyone compared the originals against these reproductions? As in gauged the differences in, oh, let's say the thickness? I ask because I would think that if I wanted to remake these of thicker steel, that it should be totally doable. That, or maybe I should just gusset(?) these to make them sturdier...

I have owned 2 sets of originals. They both were 16 gauge steel( not as thick as other brackets but not flimsy. ). The repops are probably 20 gauge. Sold all my repops. Was told they are not reproduced anymore.
The reason why the brackets were used is due to the boots being stiff. The brackets kept the air cleaner from bending. Current repop ram air air cleaners are thinner than originals and they do not accept original elements.. One exception would be RA units made from original formula dual snorkel bases. The current boots are made from GMO rubber and don't push on the air cleaner.

all the parts I have are original, except for the brackets.
I too heard that the repops were NLA - but I think they are once again available. I think that one of the original purposes of the brackets was also to locate the (non-California) air cleaners, since they did not have the fuel bowl "chimney" to clock it on the carburetor.

Again, if they went to the trouble to tool up for these and made them look right, the correct thickness steel or close to it should have been a no brainer. But thinner metal is cheaper and easier to form...
