Default Tag question

OK.....have a 73 project here...and the dash tag (vin)....has seen better days.

Before I start....I think I'd like to source a replacement...

Any input on sources?

If I'm going to do this...it's gotta be right

I wouldn't touch it myself.
If VIN is messed with could be a whole lot of problems.

Nobody makes direct replacements that look totally original. If you're looking to replace the tag with an exact reproduction, it'll have to be custom made. It can be done, but if it's not spot on it'll be obvious somebody was messing around with it.

I have a few that I've taken off of parts cars. I've taken accurate measurements of them including metal thicknesses and number/letter heights. I guess one could in theory use said information to make their own, not that anyone would do that.

Cowl tags ARE reproduced ( $250 bucks IIRC)
you can get the correct rivets, remove the VIN Tag and plate , and do some tiny body work on it and get it better looking.. I have micro bead blasted ( low pressure) a few and repainted and they look pretty nice.
