Dash/Harness: Please help identify this loose part
This fell out while I was removing my 68 dash.
Where does it belong?!

Not 100% up on the '68's but looks like a sliding contact plate broken away from an electrical switch.

Definitely not a normal service part. I know every inch of my 68 & haven't seen that part.
But, I kinda agree with the idea above where its likely a part of something else like a switch, or something? I have every dash part for my car laid out on my pool table in the basement. I could look close to see. How big is that thing?

As Andretti stated, it part of a switch. More specifically, it is the internals of you blower fan speed switch. A very common part to get fried and disintegrate on 68's.

To clarify, the part seemed to have fallen from the column area. Thank you for your responses so far!

Looks too big to be a switch slider, is the metal part brass-copper? I'm thinking more some kind of aftermarket radio or speaker innards.

I know I've seen one of those before .... a rubber isolated aftermarket radio brace? Part of a speaker hold down clamp? And ... doesn't look old enough to be an original 68 underdash part.
You don't have any old motorcycles do you? Kinda looks like an electric component isolation mount used on lots of 1970's Japanese motorcycles. |

It is NOT an aftermarket radio or speaker piece, and YES it is a switch slider, and YES it is old enough to be from a 68. I stated before, it is the inner parts of your fried blower motor switch. Since you all do not believe me I dissected one of my many parts A/C control switches. (see photos) 1968 A/C wiring set up was a bad design, only the lower speeds were put through the A/C relay. Full high speed power was directed through the switch witch caused heat, and therefore failure. In 1969 they redesigned the A/C harness so that MAX speed was not run through the switch, but through the relay. Your blower switch could have been replaced a few times in 50 years. That piece you have is a remnant from a long ago replaced switch!

I stand corrected, didn't realize they redesigned the blower power supply in 69, thought it had a relay for years.

I am guessing the A/C cars have a bigger fan switch? I looked at mine (non-A/C) a few weeks back & it looked too small to have that slider inside, so I need posted back. Never thought about the A/C cars.

The switch sizes of A/C vs non A/C are pretty much the same. They are different, but it is just the angle that they come out of the back of the controls.
