Along with the other G.M. cars, Pontiac offered a power antenna option for the Tempest. The power antenna option was offered from '64 to '69 and was available from the Factory and could also be field installed at a dealership. Although it did not particularly enhance the reception of the radio, it did give height for a given station strength and the proximity of the car to a radio station.
Basically, there were three antennas produced which handled the years '64 to '69. The first one was designed to be used on the '64 and '65 Tempest series cars. It will not fit any other year and still retain any type of Factory original appearance. The second type was the '66 and '67 model. Likewise, it will not fit any other year models. Last was the '68 and '69 unit, which again would not fit any other year models. There was a unique "convertible" antenna for 68-69. It is shorter than the htp unit and had a unique chrome "adapter"(the piece that lays on the qtr panel and gasket. Notes on interchangability: The mast with nylon wire & gear fits all year Tempest power antennas 64-69 The Late style Antenna chrome "Nut" fits 66-69. It is about 1 1/4" high. The early style Nut is less than an inch high and will only fit 66-67. Outward appearance once the nut is installed is identical. The Antenna base mounting bracket fits 64-67 models. The Antenna Cable coax cable fits all models. Big Pontiac Antennas only share the same motor. Shaft length, Mounting base and upper mounting adapters are almost all different. Masts are different but may be interchanged. There is a lot more that could be discussed about this subject. Experts reply!

A note on the lower mounting brackets. 65-68 are all the same and are what is being offered as reproductions. 64 originally used a 2 piece lower bracket that used 2 sheet metal screws. That bracket used to be reproduced, but low demand led to its discontinuance and replacement by the 65-68 bracket. 69 used a much longer horizontal lower bracket and is a one year only, though the 65-69 bracket is functional. Masts can be used from the big cars, but some of the jackets cannot be interchanged, since the wire lead to the coax was higher than the upper chrome bezel on the GTO. Some 63 through 66 big car antennas can be easily adapted to fit a 66-67 GTO.
