#62 heads in 1968?
Anyone know for certain if #62 heads were available in 1968 GTO's? I see one place were it shows 62's for 1968 but no were else can I find any info on this. I always thought 16's were the only D port 4 barrel head in 1968 but someone is telling me they were on auto A/C cars due to the slightly lower compression compared to the 16 heads. I know that to be true for '69 but not '68.

All of my experience says 62's only in 1969.

Also #31 D-port 4-barrel heads were used in 1968.
#62 heads in 1968 vehicles has yet to be documented. |

Also 31's are Ram Air I only.

The issue that causes people to believe available for 1968 is the casting date. We all know that production of the next year began in early August, which means that heads were cast in July of 1968. Just because it was "born" in 1968 does not make it correct for a 1968 model year car.

I will say for certain they were NOT available in 68. 16 heads were not available in 69 either!

My buddy John Schloe runs #16 heads on his stocker 69 firebird. According to NHRA they are correct.

They only go by what the factory gives them... the factory is the source of the wrong information in this case. Bad info just keeps getting repeated over and over, by those who haven't researched it.

Paul, as long as it has the 400-4v sticker it's good to go!

Hey...
I beg to differ! Got excited when I saw a '69 Catalina station wagon with a 400/2-barrel with '69 date-coded 16s in a junk yard. Come to find out...the '69 dated heads were small valve and pressed-in stud units...but 16s none the less. What a let-down. BTW...the year we won First Place Restored (1986)...the GTOAA Judges insisted my '62"s were incorrect and that my '69 GTO should have "16"s to be correct. The matter was resolved pretty quickly.

The 70 model year 16's were the small valve versions, cast starting in August of 69.

Bad info. I have had a standing offer of 1000.00 cash for either a 68 model year #62 head or a 69 model year #16. This goes back 25 years. They don't exist. The original source of this bad info seams to be the factory MPC. Now the most cited source is Wallace Racing! Lol
I own, have owned, restored, parted out or inspected hundreds of 68-69's... as the 68/69 POCI tech advisor and a GTOAA Concours Judge, I have had access to thousands more. My money is safe.

Everyone who has researched this has the same conclusion, this is nothing new, guys like you and I have been into this subject for 30 plus years, we know what the truth is. My 1000.00 offer has never been even challenged, let alone claimed.

"I have been into this issue for over 30 years". I bought my 68 GTO in 1984, I immediately started researching the history of these cars and looking for a correct motor for my car. I found conflicting info about what heads my car should have. I kept reading #62's were correct, but couldn't find a single #62 head with a 68 model year date code. Every original 68 I could find had #16's, and the date codes matched the cars. This was in the late eighties... so, yeah, I've been researching this for about 30 years!

Paulat - This set of 16's in the F.S. section by John Eiseman have a date code of G088. "Hot tanked and magnafluxed block cast # 9790071 standard bore, # 16 heads , hot tanked and magnafluxed, virgin heads, N iron crank# 9773524 standard. Dates G088 on both block and heads. 750.00 Plus shipping." Could these July 1968 cast #16 heads be on a early 1969 model year Car if the 1969 production year started in Aug of 1968 as Kurt said above? Could it be a switchover to the new model year thing? link to the FS ad http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=751082 BTW Kurt, I found a couple of R/A 28273's that someone might give up if you are still interested. I bought one for myself but found a couple more. Not sure on dates though. Last edited by judger69; 01-18-2017 at 10:22 PM. |
