No vin number on block
Good evening guys thank you for letting me join here.
I Have a 70 TA I would like to verify that the motor is original motor. I have cleaned the spot we’re the Vin number should be stamped on the passenger side of the block .There’s definitely no numbers there. Dead Smooth 4 speed car block number, WS that’s a good sign but there’s definitely no vin number on the passenger side and I’ve looked on the drivers side a little harder to see, but definitely nothing there. Any other options for me to verify this motor. Or if it was a factory swap, is there a way to find out if it was actually a factory swap. I know there’s been a lot of questions about this on the forum and I’ve read quite a few Getting tired of laying under the car and not finding anything .Thanks in advance. |

Any EUN number?I have a 70 4 bolt RA block.It was a engineering block.Was a 303 standard deck block.No vin,EUN or code.No SR anywhere?Tom

Yes there is 6 numbers then the WS
|

What are those numbers and the date code on the block?

Sorry 0525040 WS sorry typed it in wrong. I do have the PHS not that I understand how to read it all this all came about because I’m thinking about selling the car after owning it for 25 years

Not all the vin#'s were stamped along the passenger side of the timing chain cover, which is what most people read in print. I have a 1969 RAIV block from the Atlanta plant that has the vin# stamped on the passenger side of the machined surface parallel to the cylinder bores. It is along the diagonal edge, where the machine surface meets the bare casting. You might want to look there, FWIW.

Look on the cowl tag and see if it's has something like 04B or 04C (or maybe 04D) on it.
(probably by the left hand rivet)

OK guys, I’d like to thank everybody for all their help
Here’s the ship date 05/12/1970 Back of block 0170 Front of block 0525040 WS 1970 blue four-speed Trans Am Once again, guys, thanks in-advance. Everybody here is been real helpful. I will take everybody’s advice and look where they said, hardest part is being old and seeing it. thank you guys. |

I would hazard a guess and say your Bird's VIN is around N115xxx to N118xxx if it's a Norwood Bird.
If a Van Nuys Bird around L104xxx to L106xxx (with cowl tag of 05A or 05B) BTW, that date code is probably D170, the 'D' looks like a O (April 17, 1970).

About five years ago, I was selling a few items I had. One was a 1971 455HO 4-bolt main YE block. A potential buyer was looking for the original engine out of his car, and the dates matched perfectly. I looked for the VIN, and it was nowhere to be found. The link is below:
I think the concensus was that the original engine likely failed during run-in, so the car was pulled off the line and a replacement engine was installed in a rework area, and there was no VIN stamp there. In the case of the YZ, the cast dates on the engine were close to two months later than the cowl tag. If my memory is correct, the actual ship date on the car's PHS was also very late relative to the cowl tag.

I have a May 13 1969 WQ block with no S/N on it anywhere!! This was removed from a Hondo speed boat built in 1970 so not sure if it was ever in a car…. Unfortunately with a hairline crack across #2 main from its boating days, I never have used the block.
Also, as a real odd ball, I have a 1970 block WQ, with a June 14, 69 build date no S/N and motor mount bosses set up same as the 1969. Not sure with the 1969 year being elongated that the ‘70 blocks were already being forged so they got used?? Odd things happened I guess.. |

Have had two June '69 cast 400 XH coded blocks that were cast with the '70 9799914 casting number (5 motor mount bolt bosses per side). Have viewed several more June '69 dated 400's that were the same. Would be interesting to find out if any late May of '69 400 blocks were also cast as 9799914's.
