Interesting theory about the clearance for the exhaust manifold on the driver side Though over these many years of dealing with Pontiacs 69 TAs & , Ram Air cars I’ve never heard of anybody having a problem with the exhaust manifold using 70+ blocks, and I also put a 1971 WC 455 HO motor in a 69 Trans Am with the long branch manifolds and never had a problem back in the day

Cool - great find!
I remember looking at a white '71 T/A for sale 25 or so years ago, that was halfway between San Diego and LA. It had all of its flares and spoilers glassed in exactly as your new one does.

Carb comes back as '70 400/455 California. Original to the car?

FWIW.. At my dealership there was some paperwork with SR blocks indicated for warranty ( Not OTC)
. It stated that the dealership was responsible for stamping the car VIN or indicating it as such for remainder of warranty period. We never did one I know of. We did a bunch of SR swaps in later 70's and early 80's . Pontiac 400, 265 and 301 cars and chevys with bad oil from factory. Gm got smart in later 70's and stopped shipping whole engines, and in many cases shipped a SR block with cam and freeze plugs, and a crank if needed. Most of the SR blocks to replace a 70 ( 914) block , that I have seen are 72 , 73 blocks .

I should have kept the carb from the last '70 I had. It had the correct Ram Air 4 speed California carb laying in the trunk.

Did you also check the block in the upper area of the passenger side machined face - usually along the outer edge of the machined face.

And some have been up along where the cylinder head meets the block.
But out at the far edge away from the block code.

I’ve only seen the VIN stamped in that location on Gtos that were built in Fremont, though it is a possibility that this is a GTO block but I think it’s the original one out of the Trans Am

Also some Atlanta and (later) Framingham hit them there too.
Check all the front face on passenger side then call it done.

I don't have any idea how Van Nuys did them, but check the whole face on passenger side just to cover all the bases.

I need to get it over to my shop and get it up on a lift. Do that when I get caught up from the holidays and the weather clears up.

I do think it is the original engine. I'll check the trans and rear axle too once I get it up.
