Picked up an NOS 40838 pump over the weekend and saw it had a few interesting markings different than the first pump I recently had rebuilt (survivor) by Fred Ballard.

The first two pics show my “242S40838” I had rebuilt for my Trans Am. This pump was reported to be an original off of a 70’ T/A.

The third pic is the new NOS pump that came in the original box with “071X40838” P/N.

242S?
071X?

Are these Julien dates? Does the letter have a significance? Is it the plant they were put together at? Possibly the year? If it’s a Julien date, is it possible to determine the year? Do the numbers have some other significance? Model designation perhaps?

I’m sure someone here likely knows what’s what. I know I’m getting into the minutia but as I’ve learned, when it comes to the rare models, it goes real deep! Always a student I appreciate any and all contributions.

The last two pics are of the machine used that separates the bowl from the pump and/or re-crimps the bowl. Anyone seen this setup before? It’s pretty ingenious.

For anyone considering having Fred rebuild/restore their pump with internals that stand up to Ethanol based fuel, his work is absolutely top-notch. Not inexpensive by any means but I definitely feel like I got my moneys worth. The piece of mind knowing that I don’t have to worry about an old bowl seal failing while driving and starting a fire is worth it for me.

Ramairnacho, you’ve asked this question in another thread and we’re answered by Held for Ransom who replied, “I think the AC 40710 is the GTO unit and AC 40838 is the Firebird unit.” Seems right to me and he’d know better than I would.

The question I posed here is about date codes, not what is the right this or that for your Firebird.

Now I’m no expert at this and obviously I have a lot of questions too but I try to contribute in a meaningful way either through pictures or through experience. I hope that helps in some way buddy.

I did email him a couple years back, and I agree with this comment:

I really appreciate seeing the jig he uses;
So does he re-use the original canister housing?
That would be a revelation to me!
(I have assumed that only the cast part was reused - this would seem to further justify the expense)

As far as I understand it, Fred refuses the original canister housing as long as it’s in good condition.

You can choose between having a full restoration where the pump is completely disassembled, cleaned, and replated, or a ‘survivor’ rebuild consisting of a cleaning and rebuilding the internals only.

I’d have to say that you do get what you pay for and it seems that he has the process dialed in. The jig is pretty cool.

Well I located one for me and was told no dates if that helps which is a plus. Can I request contact info to rebuilder? Below are pictures of the one I plan on purchasing tonight. Just want to verify it's correct, but no.dates

it's in the other thread - I think it's entitled "71 Trans Am Fuel Pump" or something like that.

Thanks and I'm still learning this stuff. Yes there is date code 's my apoligies . Apparently the 1 st letter on stamp is the moth and the second is year. For example the one Im purchasing has the 1st letter as "C" indicating March and the second letter is "J" indicating 1970. then the part number 40838. Thats how originals where made but not sure on nos parts, I didnt ask Fred. I also learned that the pump I have on there now which is a 40933 is a replacement part from 1986 which Im probably going to keep as a back up unit. Im planning on keeping my car and not selling so having extra hard to find parts is a good idea.

I also learned that if stamp starts off with 3 numbers it's a replacement pump.not an original then 1 letter the letters represent different years. And the numbers are the day in that year followed buy part number after the letter of the year.my replacement one wS 159,40933 representing the 159th day of 1986 with part number 40933
