Help identifying primer sealer used on my '67 GTO project
Hello guys, I'm posting to ask for help with identifying the material a body shop used on my car so I can get some more for touch up/ spot repairs. This is about my 1967 GTO pictured as my avatar here. I'm not sure what the product was called or the mfg, but the work was originally done around 1999 or 2000. I think the parts store has since stopped selling paint products. Hoping someone will recognize the material and point me in the right direction so I can get a quart for a little touch up. It's a light yellowish color primer or sealer, and I've got a couple of small spots to fix.
Thanks M.D. |

Hello,
I did some research and checked some local shops. What I've come up with is that Mar-Hyde Ultimate 2K High Speed Urethane Primer Surfacer Buff 5544 seems to be the material that was used before. Does any one have any tips for spraying it? Thanks, md |

This is not a good direct-to-metal primer. Was it applied to metal on your car?
It is done in collision type work but avoided on a collector car.

In the few areas that it was, it's lifting.. I'm planning to remove all material in those areas and use rust mort on the bare metal, then cover all bare metal and current bodywork with grey primer, then overall with the 2K. Will this work?

Why not strip the entire car back down to bare metal and start with epoxy primer? That is what I would do.

If it's sat in primer since 99 or 2000 I would definitely strip it back down. Primer is porous and if left for an extended period of time will let moisture through and you most likely will have surface rust underneath it all now. Epoxy primer as a first step stops that from happening if your going to leave the car alone for long periods. Unfortunately anything you apply to the primer on there now will eventually fail.

will it work?probably . but you have to ask yourself. do i feel lucky?i would listen to the others if i was going for peace of mind. but i am a gambler. it would also depend if it was now or never. in my experience sometimes we take chances and live with the consequence. or do it right do it once.
