Default "clocking" 12 Si alt

Is it possible to clock a 12 SI alternator without taking all apart? Will the brushes stay put or will they pop off if you pull the case back slightly? Thanks.

Yes , but do not separate it any more thay absolutly necessary. Just enough to clear the pivot bolt mount and no more.

You might as well get a paperclip ready.

When doing 10SI's I have always used a plastic spray tube that comes with carb cleaner or penetrating oil. That way when I forget to pull it out I don't wreck the alternator when I start the engine with it still in there. Please don't ask.

If you have an impact wrench, you can take off the pulley nut. Remove nut washer pulley fan and spacers. Then you can pull the pulley end housing off while keeping the rotor in the rear housing. Rotate pulley end housing where you want it and reassemble .

If you do it that way I have used a heavy rag or glove to hold the pully-fan with my hand when hitting it with the impact both off and back on. Never had a problem unless the nut and shaft were rusted. I would also keep the 4 case bolt in until the pulley nut is off to keep the rotor centered and from doing any damage if it starts spinning.
