Slap Shot over Smokey and Bandit in 1977
Am I the only one that thought Slap Shot was a better movie the Smokey and Bandit when they came out in 1977.
Granted I saw them at the theatre when they came out. I was 17 and drove a GTO and played hockey. Still think they are both really funny and great still to this day.

Having lived in Johnstown a bit, and going to some Tomahawks games, the Slap Shot movie excitement is still their big thing.
Looked all over town and couldn't find the 70 GTO.. |

I don't like that one, although I hate hockey...Paul Newman was one of the best.

From a theatrical/acting viewpoint, I think that Slapshot was a much better movie. I think that Smokey and the Bandit was more of a commercial success and, of course, is more iconic today.
I like them both, but for different reasons.

What is hockey? Is that the game where you ride around on horses and hit a ball around with a 2 by 4?

It's a game so fast paced that at one point they had to have a puck tracker for some unfortunate people. People that just really needed glasses.

Slap Shot. SATB was just silly.
I did note that Paul's GTO hood was jacked up in the rear like all seem to be... and as a hockey player I am kinda biased too. |

I don't know how you compare.... Slap Shot for me.
SATB's car action is fun and Jerry Reed (incredible guitar player) gave it a good song. Hasn't aged very well and it's painful to watch now ....

I saw SATB in the theatre when it was still new. I didn't see Slap Shot until about 1983. I had just recently got interested in watching NHL games on TV, so it made me appreciate the humor a lot better. Slap Shot still is one of my favorite comidies, but I never thought SATB was any more than a flash in the pan period flick. I think the only reason I went to the theatre to see it was because I had a thing for Sally Field.
And I don't give it any credit for becoming a Pontiac enthusiast either. That came a couple years later. |

It's hard to believe that they got Paul Newman signed up for that.

Scenes from Slap Shot were shot at the Utica Memorial Auditorium in my home town. At one time home to the NJ Devils top farm team, now home to the Vancover Canucks top farm team

I lived in Ilion at the time and was an extra in the movie along with a friend of mine. I remember Edward Hanna was the mayor at the time and not that well liked. He walked on the ice to make an announcement before filming began, slipped and fell flat on his butt. Everyone started clapping.

Sometimes the Hanson Brothers come out and do appearances between periods at the Air Canada Centre. Haven't seen them in a year or so, though.
