Please recommend a Phoenix machine shop
I have a standard bore '69 428 to magnafluxe, align bore, and cylinder bore with a torque plate installed.
Can anyone recommend a engine machine shop in Phoenix that speaks Pontiac? I've been to a few and walked out disappointed that they a) didn't ever mill a Pontiac block with a torque plate or b) have less experience with pontiacs in general. Thanks for any help you can offer. Dan |

Hi Dan,
I have one... I had my '64 389 V8, which looked like it came out of the wreckage of the Titanic when I brought it to him, completely gone through by a guy I received on a referral from a friend. Not sure where you live in Phoenix, but the shop I went to is Action Speed & Machine in Mesa, AZ. The guy who owns Action Speed, Keith, is pretty much a one-man shop so he's a bit slow, but he does great work for a very reasonable price. Keith is very helpful with questions and though he isn't a Pontiac expect, but he knows enough of the idiosyncrasies of Pontiac engines to get done what is needed and do it well. If you're just looking to get done what you described in your thread and general stuff like you would do for a stock or mild performance rebuild, Keith will take care of you. PM me and I can send you his contact info and business address, or tell you more about my experience with him. If you're looking for someone who really knows his Pontiacs and has a shop in AZ, speak to Paul Carter (he's "gtofreek" in this forum). He's a Pontiac engine and machine shop specialist, but he's in the Tucson, AZ area. I've never met him personally or had work done by his shop, but Paul has been awesome with answers to questions I have posted in this forum and is held in high regard by others in this forum. Good luck! |

I just got a block/crank done by Paul down in Tucson. It is worth the drive to have your stuff done right, and 69 428's don't show up in junkyards anymore.
Prices are competitive too. It won't be the cheapest in town, but it will be the best IMO. I've had work done by another shop closer to home, but I've been spoiled now on what to expect. Got my rotating assy neutral balanced within the mass of a rain drop. I have pics to prove it.

I've used Zimmerman Racing in Phoenix a couple times and have been very satisfied.

Thank you for the valuable information. Too bad Paul isn't closer. I'm on the north side of Phx. I had a good, quick conversation with Zimmerman. Sounds like they know Pontiacs and horsepower. I'm planning to take the block to them in about two weeks after I finish disassembly and put a "best guess" plan together for my goals and let them determine what is or isn't practical or needed.
Thanks again, Dan |

I didn't see any web smack talk about them, only positive. Hope it works out, keep us posted with your experience.

I was able to pick up a 1964 Pontiac OFFENHAUSER Tri Power intake manifold e/w carbs. The carbs are just sitting on the intake manifold and there's nothing else on the unit meaning no linkage no fuel lines. Can anyone tell me of a good person who can put this back to operating condition?

Machinist
I really like Darl in North Phoenix. He usually comes and picks up my stuff.
He sells motors on Ebay as BlueMonkeyPerformance. He will listen to you. I had him redo a head for me that got really messed up by a so-called Pontiac expert who used SBC parts on my head. I am not sure of his ability to bore with torque plate etc. call him. 1-602-561-3054 |

Bzltyr, Thank you. I went to his shop and dropped off my intake manifold and he did a great job. Took it to him on Friday and got it back today. Very quick service. I would recommend him to anyone who lives in the valley.

Robert at SRE(623-582-1859) has done my Pontiac stuff for over 20 years, and is in the north Phoenix area. He even has a torque plate big enough for the aftermarket blocks. He did my RA-V stuff when I needed work done on it.

Thank you Dannnn for your post. I was wondering the same thing. I'm moving to Goodyear in October. Will be needing engine work on my 67 Bonneville. Scott

He is building my engine, and has my car in his shop. |

Old thread but some more good words about a couple shops.
First I'll say Paul Carter in Tucson (Koerner Racing) is my first choice (Paul is on the forums here). He's a super nice guy. He's top notch, they know how to make HP, they know camshafts, and their machine work is next to none. It's worth the drive for me from Prescott. He did an engine for me a while back and I'll be using him again shortly on another build I'm doing where I'm looking to squeeze HP out of it, and I trust Paul and Jeff can do that better than anyone in the valley. They also have access to a dyno which I feel is a vital part of the engine build. The only other I've used in Phoenix is Mike Zimmerman @ Zimmerman Racing. They are well versed in Pontiacs, matter of fact he has been doing all of Franks machine work and assembly (All Pontiac IAII blocks in Scottsdale) and works a lot with his Tiger heads. He's done 2 engines for me, one for a customer car I was doing and another for me personally. His shop is small, behind his house, but he's knowledgeable and his machine work on the 2 engines I had done were spot on. He also has access to a dyno. Both engines he did for me used custom ground cams of his choosing, but I'll say when it comes to that, I'd trust Paul and Jeff in Tucson to come up with a better stick. Hope this helps. |

I'd also like to add, when I moved to AZ in 2007 I was in the same boat as many others. I had to start all over looking for a good quality machine shop.
I met Mike here on the forums who had lived here in AZ longer than me, familiar with the car scene, and knew the machine shops. He explained why he wouldn't use various shops here in Phoenix and told me Paul in Tucson was the only shop to go to. I stay in touch with Mike and we occasionally meet, he's a great guy and was absolutely right about many of the shops around here. I think his screen name here is 68bird. If interested you may try PM'ing him and get his take on it. |
