Ohc6 engine oil / additives??
Hi guys happy holidays. I’ve read here and there about the cam and rockers wearing down. What type of engine oils and or additives are you guys using to help lube the upper valve train. I’ve been using regular 10/30 10/40 but I know oil these days are not the same as back in the day.
Why do these engines have this problem? Is there something I should avoid ? Like revving the engine too high? Or? |

VR1 AND V-POWER are all I've been using for years, with no extras and no issues.

I agree with Jeff, VR1 is a good choice, and at east 92 octane if your engine exceeds 9.5 to 1 compression.
I know the cams and followers had wear issues back in the 1960's, but most of that was attributed to the owners not following proper oil change intervals, and the poor quality of the oil available at the time. 1966 & early 67 engines may have an issue with alignment of the mail oil passage from the block to the head, but that is hit and miss. I have seen two 1966 heads with that issue. Remember just because Jay Leno said its an issue with these engines, does not mean its actually true. I have seen flat cam lobes and worn cam followers on engines that were removed from cars back in the late 70's-80's. But I have never had the issue on any engine I rebuilt and used quality oil, Also if rebuilding the head make sure the proper size oil restrictor is installed. To much oil on the top end is also and issue with these engines.

Thank you guys you’ve convinced me. I’m going to invest in some better oil. I want to avoid having costly mechanical problems down the road that I surely don’t have a clue in repairing.
Wow 93 92 octane? Here in Los Angeles they should call gas a cocktail. Here we have a summer blend and a winter blend I don’t think anyone knows what their mixing together. Our cocktails are clear to light yellow pee color. The highest is 91 octane. Over $5 and some parts of the city $6 a gallon. Thank you and Happy Holidays. |

I'll second the VR1 oil... good stuff for sure. And even here in TX, Super (93) is getting close to $4 a gallon!
