Thats the second column shift SD TA I have seen. The first in Rocky's 2018 article about a 73 ordered in primer that had column shift. (https://www.pontiacv8.com/articles/2...primed-example) Wonder why this one was order like this.

Doubt they ordered a column shifter.

If they did not order the console the shifter would be on the column.

One question John, if you order power windows, don't you need a console to mount the switch in? I've never seen an early 70s second gen with power window switch anywhere but in the console, but I don't claim to know all the intricacies of second gens. It just occurred to me that there would be no place to mount the power window switch......

The original owner ordered it without console.

I'd have to look it up, but the power windows would probably require a console?

Owner and I worked on the fuel tank this week. As I mentioned earlier, he opted for a Spectra Premium replacement tank without filler neck as the correct neck is not available for a 74 car. The OE tank was a real mess with 40 years of evaporated fuel in it and numerous holes and so forth. The Spectra tank is Canadian made and pretty nice. It has nice sharp feature lines in the stampings and nice finish. The only item we weren't crazy about was the copper tube they used for the vapor return line. But it was already soldered in place and there wasn't a compelling reason to remove it. We decided to double flare it and use a flare union, then marry it to the original vapor line which was still in good condition. We also silver soldered in the old neck into the new tank after thorough cleaning of the neck. 8% silver solder is a little tricky to use but it came out nice and is leak free, verified by a smoke test with my evap. tester. Also, he stripped the paint off the OE cap to reveal a factory epoxy primer of some sort of rust resistant primer. Ready to install in the next few days.

Looks great!

On my '74, the original fuel cap seemed to be plated with yellow zinc. I had it plated again the same way.

My 1973 Formula had a gold cad plated fuel cap such as this one. Imagine 1974 would be the same..

Thanks for the pic. Cad plating makes much more sense than any paint IMO. Not sure what the deal is there. The stamping looks identical. No real meaningful update yet. The engine is ready to start but the owner found the master cylinder and brakes have some issues after sitting nearly 40 years. So he has the brake system opened up and is assessing the situation. Would like working brakes for general safety before starting it up.

Sorry, nothing interesting to report right now. Project got bogged down by some winter weather and no working brake system. Wasn't comfortable trying to start it without working brakes and it needs the brakes to work anyway. Owner had a numbers correct MC coming nearly a month ago and it never shipped. He thinks he was scammed. I loaned him my little hone and it looks good to me. I think he is just going to put it back together and bleed and we will see if they work OK. Engine is ready to start now other than priming the oil system. More as soon as it's ready to fire up. Thanks for the interest.

Mike, thanks for the reply. I was following this to see the progress. My dad worked for Pontiac from 1967 to 1980. He did quite a bit of work on cars for magazine test, road test, special vehicles for promo's etc. I remember him driving home a few 73 and 74 SD T/A's. I remember him driving a red 74 for a couple of weeks and riding to school in it. As a 7-year-old that was pretty cool.
Look forward to the progress on this one.

Thought I would up-date this thread. Still not a huge amount to report. The owner contacted me today and said the complete overhaul of the entire brake system hydraulics is complete and it has a nice solid pedal and is ready to get back on the engine now. Everything brake fluid touches has been overhauled saving all the original castings including the combo valve. The only "New Parts"are the rear wheel cylinders and the rubber flex lines. Engine oil has been changed. All it needs now is fuel and the oil system primed with a drive rod and drill. Then it should be ready to be started for the first time in nearly 40 years. I will up-date when it's running. Thinking early next week.

Well, the SD-455 is back up and running after a long, long rest. Cranked about 5-7 seconds and started right up and went to fast idle. It was damn cold out. Around 30 degrees but sunny. The car warmed up and ran about a half hour. Nothing sounds like an SD-455! Light rumble and piston slap, slightly rough idle, just a beautiful mechanical symphony. Best sounding low compression engine ever, IMO. Next, new tires, and license plates. Then off to remove some rubber from the new tires!. I have some video. I will post a link as soon as the owner gets it published so the link will work. Thanks for following along. Low mileage, all original car ready to roll again.
