I recently received some helpful info and photos from some board members on the above.. attached are a few pics of the finished install. the pump and the new alternator are both polished, not correct but it looks cool if you like shiny stuff. Thanks for the help, appreciated.

Excellent work. I know getting the one way valves into the holes can be a challenge.

Just a note, after playing Sesame Street's "One of these things is not like the others" with the grandkids, we caught a flipped bracket.

That belt is going to jump!
Looks like the smog pump needs to space out forward.

Funny, I have seen this brace installed both ways on other cars. I put mine back exactly how I found it and I'm confident it was that way from new.

You're absolutely right!I took a closer look today and it is a little too far back. Drove it about 20 miles yesterday before I saw the problem, ran without any issue but I'll fix it before heading out again. Don't know why it hasn't lined up correctly, not sure how to get it right... shim out the pump pulley? Shim out the pump itself from the brackets? Any suggestions?

You should be able to shim out the pump itself using washers or spacers. Leave the pulley be, you don't want to increase the load on the front bearing.

I would have to agree with that statement.

Could there have been some spacers accidently omitted?
I'll try to skim through the assembly manual to see what it might show.

Only thing I can spot is the brace (#1) being reversed.

Default Belt Alignment

There's no reason that it shouldn't line up perfectly if all of the original brackets and pump are in place. It almost looks like the alternator is too far forward, but its difficult to tell with out a straight-on shot of each component in relation to the crank pulley.

That photo makes the alternator actually look farther forward than it is in real-life. All the brackets I used are the original ones...I don't know why it is not lining up. It didn't seem a problem when I had the smog gear on the car 25 or so years back from what I remember, I only removed it then because the bearings went bad, which is interesting after reading the above comments about them. I took it out today and it ran fine, high RPM didn't seem to bother the belt. I'll try shimming the pump out a bit, thanks for the tip re the problem of using shims directly behind the pulley itself. There is no easy factory-style fore and aft adjustments on either the alternator or the pump, pity. Jim.

You had a hell of a sharp eye to spot the mis-alignment in the first place, IMO. I would have missed it.
