Figuring push rod length
Planning a stock rebuild on my 66 389. If the block needs to be decked and or the heads need to be surfaced, at what point can this require a custom(non stock) length push rod?

Pushrods are available every .050" in length so a simplistic answer would be that you would have to remove over .050" before going to the next shortest size available. Considering that heads usually have less than .010" removed on a cleanup and decks up to about .010", you are less than half way to ordering new pushrods. So if everything is really stock, standard length pushrods will be good.
If the shop uses a different length valve or the stock replacement camshaft has a different base circle or a dozen other things change, then you might need a different length to keep the geometry where it should be.
