Not a GTO but a 67 Lemans I looked at in about 2004, 3 on the tree, only one I've seen.

I just looked at the 1967 GTO/2+2/Sprint dealer brochure. It surprised me too. It says that the GTO has a 3 speed column shift standard. A heavy duty 3-speed floor shift is optional as are two 4-speeds with floor shifts; a close ratio and a wide ratio. A console is only available with floor shift transmissions.

So, to throw another tidbit out there, my understanding was that the standard three speed was a non-synchro first gear Muncie column shift. If you ordered the HD Dearborn it was always a floor shift due to a different linkage.
If you ordered the console with floor shift, it could be either depending on engine size/model.

They used the heavy duty Ford 3 speed, thats why the bell housings have two bolt patterns.

Every 3 speed early GTO I've ever come across had the HD Dearborn-built Ford unit. Actually stronger than the 4 speed Muncie.

The dealer brochure says: "Transmissions: A 3-speed all-synchro manual transmission with column-mounted lever is standard." "Or you can order a fully synchro heavy-duty 3-speed with Hurst floor shifter." "Next come two versions of the fully synchronized, aluminum-case 4-speed with Hurst floor shifter." "Wide ratio" "Close ratio (available only with 3.90:1 and 4.33:1 axle ratio for special driving) Then there's our new heavy-duty 3-speed torque converter Turbo Hydra-Matic, its lever mounted on the steering column." "The console accommodates the shifter for all floor-shift transmissions."
