Default 66 GTO 3 speed manual column shift?

I never knew they existed until a friend showed me his PHS docs and we researched and found there were two different three speeds available in 66. I'm now being told this was common? I have never seen it before in all of my years in the hobby... not on a GTO! 66 looks to be the only year this was available according to Eric White's book. Anyone have any insight? Ever owned one?

Had a friend that owned one a few years back. Did look a little out of place.

Wasn't there a 64 GTO, on eBay a year ago, that was a 3x2 and Column Shift? IIRC,
it was Alamo Biege, painted top( no vinyl) and was listed for sale in the San Diego area?
It was on quite a few times. In fact, I remember it may have been discussed here at P.Y. Larry B. p.s. it is odd, with that combo, huh?

I have heard of them, but have never seen one. And I've been looking hard at GTO's...a LOT of GTO's..... for the past 40 years.

I think the beige one was an automatic on the column.

Paul, they are NOT common, but they do exist. I've only seen one in my over 40 years fooling with GTO's. It was at the GTOAA Nats in Wichita back in 1988 or so. Odd looking deal with a console that had a black block off plate in the hole in the console.

The unofficial name is "A Three on the Tree" very unusual on a gto. I just picked up a 66 that had a 3spd console floor mount originally and I thought that was odd. irgoatmike

I had a '66 several years ago with the goofy 3 on the tree
Not something you see alot for a reason.
I still have one piece left from my stock as I thought I would rebuild that car but never did.

An old neighbor up the street where I grew up bought a Marina Turquoise '66 Post car new with the 3-speed column shift originally. He had converted it to a floor shift, but the steering column still had the provision for the shift lever. It had those cool "Custom Wheel Discs" too, first time I remember seeing those.

wouldn't the optional console move the shifter?
I have read of these one-year three on the tree cars, but figured they followed conventional options rules where the console move the shifter location.

That 66 sold at Mecum has its own story regarding its console , and shifter block-off plate.
I think part of the story is included in the Mecum listing.

Car has had publicity in the past several times.

In general production in 66 ,
You would pay additional to get the 3 spd floor shift (versus the standard 3 on the Tree)
And then additional to get the console.

I have only known of 1 other 66 GTO with 3 on the Tree
Ronnie Gates of SC parted it out in the late 80's
