69-72 Starter Splash/Debris Shield
Anyone ever seen a starter splash shield on a 69-72 A body? I believe they were on 68 A bodies, very similar to the 66-67 shield, but not sure if they were on the later A bodies. Dug through my 70 assembly manual, couldn't find one identified, so thought I'd ask here. Thank you for your help.

Here's a pic from an older thread on a 68 GTO:

There's a bunch of folks on here that have originals and a bunch that have parted cars, anyone seen this shield on a 70 - up A body?

Listed in Parts book as: SHIELD, Trans Control Splash-Frame
The shield in question isn't for the starter,
it protects the linkage from road hazards, Dirt/Rocks. Not sure this will offer much but I have a photo copied parts book, it list/shows this as for 69-72 A&G in the illustration section (Group 4.000) 2 Shields are shown one for MT GTO & GP & 1 for AT w/Console Both show a 4.067# but the poor illustration definitely shows two types of shields. I then looked in the part number section but the 4.000 section jumps over the 4.067#? so can't help with an actual part number.

Jeff, you have to look under each trans. style to see if 4.067 is listed.

Thank you Jeff and HFR for looking into this, I really appreciate the response. I bet this is specific for auto trans with console and NOT for a 4spd. Wouldn't you think this would be In the assembly manual? It shows the shield for the reverse lockout linkage on both auto and manual, but nothing that goes up between the frame and cross member where this is.

So, is the consensus that 4 speed cars did actually have a debris shield for the linkage? Asking specifically about a 70 GTO 4 speed. Thanks.

Steering lock, back drive shields
I know 70 had them on floor shift cars. The auto had an additional larger shield. The 4 speed had just the smaller one and it mounted to the frame with the shaft and lever mounting bracket with 2 screws along with the speedo cable bracket. Alot going on here. The GP had the same setup, but the bracket and shield are both longer and will not fit the A body. The pic I attached was from a 70 Lemans with auto console. The larger shield is blocking part of the smaller one. It is meant to protect the linkage and spring. This can be seen as OG68 mentioned in the assembly manual.

Thanks for the info. I’m guessing they were a frequently removed item and ended up in the trash with the reverse lockout rods.

My 70 Sport 350/350 automatic console car has that slash shield on it. My 72 did not.
