Roger, my compliments on your beautiful shop and restoration skills and your new project. Did a double take when I saw the sticker. Grew up in Delaware county, Pa and my first GTO, a 4 spd. convertible, came out of Marsh Pontiac. It was also Liberty blue/ white top with black int when I got it in '73 but was originally Palladian silver. Had some body & paint work done at Marsh right after I got it and was a regular at their parts counter for years. That poor car had a tough paper route and I doubt it survived the 70's but she sure was fun. Yours seems to have been treated a whole lot better. Can't wait to see it done.

Thanks. Yes it does look pretty clean underneath. I think it won't need to be blasted. Just cleaned up using a wire wheel and then epoxy primed.

Thank you! Well that's an interesting coincidence. I'm glad mine didn't stay in the east and came to AZ. From the little rust mine has, I'd say it was taken care of pretty well when it was in the east. Maybe not driven on salty roads too many times.

I few new photos today. I removed the rusty motor mount bracket from the firewall. The heater core must have been leaking a long while before it was detected. I'm glad they reproduce these. It would be a pain to repair it.

I am thinking at this point that the underside of the body will be fairly easy to clean up with a wire wheel so I'm thinking it might be overkill for me to buy a rotisserie. I raised the body a little more and put my 12 ton jack stands underneath on top of blocks. It's off the floor 35" and I can work on it from a sitting position with it raised that much.
I did leave just a bit of tension on the hoist to act as a safety.

Removed the wheels:

Good idea about Jacks would not be a fun time if something failed. Be Safe but have FUN!

I doubt the jacks would fail but it's never a bad idea to get a little extra safety.
The jacks are double locking and I figure the body weighs about 600 lbs so that would be about 150 on each jackstand. Cinder blocks aren't recommended for supporting a car but 150 lbs or less than 40 lb per leg should be easy for a cinder block.

I agree on not using those cinder bricks especially on there side. They would be much stronger setting straight up.
Myself I would feel safer with crisscrossed and stacked blocks of 2x4''s screwed together.
Great thread by the way. I have the exact 69 convertible same color combo less air plus hideaway's

Thanks! You are the third guy I've heard from on this forum that has a '69 Liberty Blue/Parchment GTO convertible! Seems pretty incredible for a color that wasn't one of the big sellers.

I got the frame all torn down and ready to start cleaning up:

I did find that the frame needs a bit of attention in a couple of places. The body mount location under the rusted bracket will need to get a small patch. Amazing what a leaking heater core can cause.

Also have some rust under the transmission crossmember mounts. It's gone a little thin and I will need to correct that too. Both sides look about the same.

I'll do the patching before I blast the frame.

You can also count me in as #4. I too have a '69 Liberty w/parchment, white top and hideaways. Like 3goats, no a/c on mine either.

Wow, that really is incredible!

I've done a couple of things since my last update. Yesterday I completely disassembled the rear axle and did some parts organizing. The rear is now ready for a wire wheel before I blast it.

This afternoon I started with a wire wheel on the frame and got almost 3/4 done. I'll turn the frame upside down to do the bottom side. This is a good amount of work but is a necessary step before blasting. It has undercoating on it and that has to come off first.

Did you find a VIN stamp on the frame?

I did not. Do we know all '69 GTO's had the VIN stamped into the frame?
I did find a date and some other numbers with it but it wasn't in the form of a VIN or partial VIN. This was on the side of the D/S frame rail behind the rear wheel.

Nothing on top on mine. Mine was a Baltimore built car.

Default Made the repair on the frame today

First I used a carbide burr to ream out the hole to the edge of the compromised area. I used one of the old rubber mounts to mark the circle.

I then cut a patch from some old sheetmetal the same thickness as the frame:

I used a grinder to get the final fit for the patch and beveled the edge a little. I then tacked it in place and then welded all the way around:

I then smoothed it out using an 80 grit roloc disc:

I then marked the hole and drilled it out. Drilled it a little smaller than needed and again used the burr to get it precise. Done.

I decided that the rails where the transmission crossmember mounts was not compromised enough to need any repair. It looked worse before I wire brushed the frame.

While I had the welder out, I repaired the broken stud on the p/s parking light housing. I broke this when I removed it from the front panel and laid it on the welder at the time to remind me to fix it later.

Default Btw, I thought I would show what wire wheel I used to do the frame.

This photo shows an assortment of wire wheels I use. I only used the cup on what I did yesterday. The twisted wire wheels are the only type I've found that will hold up for doing this kind of thing. Also, it's essential to use a face shield, N95 or better face mask, leather gloves and heavy clothing when using these wheels.

I stripped the quarters and filler panel with using the same tool and stripping discs you see here. I used up 2 of them with what I've done so far. I order all my stripping discs, cut-off discs and roloc discs online from a place called Roarke Supply. They carry quality stuff at good prices.

Mine was also a Baltimore car, 4th week of June. My frame was pretty pitted, but I was still able to read it after I had it sandblasted.

That frame-rail stamping is so light, it doesn't take much paint and grime to conceal it.

Here are what the numbers look like on my 68 Arlington. Not quit as bad as they look in the photo, but very light. Two coats of paint and most of them were gone.
