Default Sail panel minutia

When installing the sail panels in my GTO I noticed the screws that are somewhat centrally located going right through the panels on the originals. They appear to have been randomly placed based on how each panel was laying at the time of factory installation. They are in two completely different places compared to each other, and the factory screws I pulled out are self drilling ... looks like the factory installer just picked a random location that would pull the panel in the way he wanted and went to town with a screw gun.

There are no pre-drilled holes in the same locations on both sides, so it's not like someone couldn't find the original holes, there are none, just the single holes where these self drilling screws were put in.

Trying to decide if I should do the same with my replacement panels ... pick a spot where the screw would do the most good, or just leave it with no screws as they sit pretty nice as is.

Not sure I'm following you but my sail panels were not screwed in. They had a single retainer on the back side (similar to the door panel) that pressed into a hole in the 'C' pillar. I'll dig through my old parts box and see if I can find one.

Do you have a photo?

I've already installed the new ones so no photo of the old setup. My car had neither the normal door style clip, or the hole and plastic insert where it would insert in the C pillar. It had one screw on each side, approximately the center of the panel. Was a chrome trim type screw with the chrome washer ... but it was a self drilling type.

I checked the GTO for the door type retainer holes because the panels off my parts car lemans DID have them.

The C pillars on my GTO don't even have the holes for that type of retainer, and while my original GTO sail panels are long gone, the two self drilling screws were still in place with bits of old sail panel still trapped in them.

Perhaps a small batch of bodies where they neglected to punch the holes at Fisher? So the people on the line just put in a screw?

After some digging I found some of my reference photos from about 9 years ago when I stripping the interior down to the bare metal.

Note the very obvious single chrome screw in the C pillar ... and no evidence of any door type retainer visible. Other side was the same way, but the screw was in a different place by about six inches.

Also ... anyone have pictures of where the coat hanger hooks goes in relation to the shoulder belt attachment? I'm feeling three screws I left in there under the headliner ... but I forget if it was the forward two holding the seat belt anchor and the rear holding the coat hanger?

(PS. Car was not nearly that rusty ... must have a rusting filter on my camera)

There are two mounting holes but only one pin per side

Interesting ... wish I took more pictures Pretty sure I DO have those mounting holes, but there were no plastic retainer inserts in any of them. And I could swear the sail panels off the parts car had the slot type mount for the clips (like the door panels) instead of the metal base I see on yours.

The repop panels had a place for some kind of retainer on the back that didn't appear to line up with anything at all on the C pillar.

They look real nice installed .... except for being the wrong color, so I should probably leave well enough alone for now until some time in the future when I can get Ivy Gold parts again. As it is I have about three different colors .. dark green sail panels, headliner and package tray, SEM Medium Gold Poly (which doesn't match Ivy Gold like it should), original door panels and rear seat, Legendary front seats ... cause, cause ... Covid Some day when/if they start making Ivy Gold stuff again I can fix a lot of it.

Thanks for the photos .... exactly what I needed, so the three screws I'm feeling there are two for the anchor, and one behind for the coat hanger.
