Tilt Column / Shaft Movement
Hello everyone,
Hunted around a bit and could not find a related post. This tilt column is going into a 69 GTO. Currently the lower column shaft with ragjoint connecting to steering box is removed. I removed the wheel to replace ignition lock cylinder. As I was reassembling, I noticed movement in the shaft. This movement actually allows the lock plate to drag on the housing as one turns the wheel. Unsure if this has to do with the lower shaft being disconnected or not. There is a smaller amount of play side to side. Any advice or other posts I should review. Thanks for looking Sent from my SM-G991U using Tapatalk |

Some end play is normal (and required) but sounds like you may have too much, I'd have a look at the bearing race in the bowl and the screws that hold the bowl together. The bearing races can loose individual balls and the bowl bolts being untorqued can create some up-down and in out end play. The shop manual is pretty descriptive but needs to be read a few times before attempting a disassembly since there is a lot of steps.

Doesn’t the large spring that is not currently installed provide preload on the shaft that would limit the end play ?

Do you have the shop manual?

Thank you both, I do have the 69 shop manual. I have since gone through and review the parts.explosion to ensure I have the correct spring placement. Now that I have the replacement boot/seal for the lower shaft, I will reassemble the lower end of the shaft a d reinstall. I'll check back in and let you know how it feels o ce reassembled.

It's been a while since I wrote this post. I have been able to install the shaft connecting the column to the steering box. There is still some side to side movement once everything is installed (spring wheel etc). Might be normal, just feels off to me. Makes me question if I need to replace the upper bear ( check torque on bowl). If I tear into it, can I repack the bearing? I'd replace, but have not found a bearing. Thoughts?
