1957 Wagon carcass, I think I know what this is.
Spotted this in the salvage yard the other day.
Know what is going on here?

With coil springs it's not a 57, unless they were added to the chassis by a conversion company.
Looks like a power lift gate to me. |

Good catch on the coils, I think those were "helpers", see the air bags?
Anyone else?

It isn't 56-57 Pontiac (same frame). It isn't 58 Pontiac. I doubt that it is Pontiac, certainly not early Pontiac without the rise in frame for rear axle.

Pretty sure it was a '57, in any event, it was in the Pontiac row .
I believe it was a Railroad checker with hydraulically operated steel wheels to run on the rails.

Did it have the same/similar hydraulic setup in the front too? The railroad car versions have rail wheels on both ends.
As I said in my previous post, it doesn't look like any 57 Pontiac frame I've seen either, surely doesn't look like the links Larry posted. 57 is last year for leaf springs. In 58 they went to a X backbone frame with 4 wheel coils, that carried over until 60. In 61 they went to a swept hip perimeter frame. The picture doesn't show enough of the frame for me to discern if it is any of those types, but coil springs pretty much eliminate the 57 year. The early frames also have an reinforcing X in the center with a large hole for the drive shaft in the center. You've seen it in person, was that X in the center? |

Looks extremely incomplete and/or way to light duty for rail inspection car lift.
