Easily.

Even a 245/60-15 fits fine.

Had a ‘70 Tempest T-37 some years back with 245/60 & 275/60s on 15x7 factory Rally II wheels, all good.

1968 and 1969 have a different wheel opening restricting you to 235/60s up front, 1970 - 1972 have a wider opening near the bottom.

Thanks! Just making sure. Reading over the old threads it gets kind of confusing really.
Thinking on 235/60/15 up front, 255/60/15 out back.
Currently 215/70/15 up front. Back 255/60/15, I’ll keep that size the same.

How about 255/60-15 on all four wheels? Lots of 70-72's running that and would make tire rotation and carrying a spare easier.

Here is my 70 with that size on all 4. Haven't driven it yet but looks like lots of clearance.

Well, I think I did read where some people had rubbing with the 255 60 15. I’m not road racing or worried too much about maxing anything out at this point, so the 235 is fine for me.

255r60-15's on a '70 Tempest with no rubbing issues anywhere (27" diameter). The 15x7 steel wheels are older aftermarket with a 4.5" backspace. The 245R60-15 tires are closest to the G60x15 Polyglas GT's/Wide Ovals. 235R60-15 will look short in '70-'72 A-body wheel openings IMHO.

Hmmm…..now ya got me thinking. It would be nice to rotate front to rear, and have all the same size. I’m just so used to fatties and skinnies after all these years, but I’m not racing anything anymore.
So did anyone here have 255/60/15’s rub in the front? I know there were some old threads where they did, so it must be close.
Thanks!

Buy a pair of 255/60s and put them up front to see if they’re fitting they way they should.

If not you now have your rear tires ready and can buy 245s for the front.

It is nice to have all 5 tires the same, that’s of course including your spare.

Duh. I have 255’s on the back now, I’ll just rotate them up front and see if they rub!
I have my original 14” rims with the white wall Michelin’s sitting in the corner. I’ll just put those on in the meantime that way I have my 15” rims off and ready to bring to the tire shop when the tires come in eventually. I never let anyone touch my car anyway, I just drop off tires and rims.
Thanks for watching me think out loud, please don’t laugh.
Now, out to the garage!

Swapped the 255’s to the front. Going lock to lock everything was fine standing still, and going around the block. Then I stopped and went to lock and backed up then forwards, as if parking. THEN it rubs. I also turned hard into the driveway off the street cranking the wheel, minor rubbing.
I measured my frame heights years ago while chasing down a wheel hop issue and it was just about perfect, and if front springs did need replacement, it’s not something I’m getting into right now.
PLUS these tires I have are worn about 50%, so new ones would rub worse. No biggie, I had to try.

Exactly what I figured.

Everything looks fine until you really drive it like you should.

And hey, a little rubbing in certain situations isn’t a deal breaker for many of us.

Just for reference. Whitewalls are 215/75/14 on original rims. The blackwalls are the 255/60/15. Pictures aren’t the greatest, but figure in case anyone looks up the topic in the future.

On my 70 GTO I run 245/60 15 up front with a 15x7 with 4" backset . No rubbing at all. 255/60 15 in the back with a 15x8 with 4.5" backset.

I went ahead and got a set of 245/60/15’s. That way I can rotate normally, and shouldn’t have rubbing issues. My tire guy should have them mounted Monday as he’s gone for the weekend.
Thanks for the opinions everyone.
Now-RWL out or in?!

Which brand did you get? I like the black look unless they have the redline stripe or certain brands I’ll put the lettering out. Not a fan of the white stripe on muscle cars.

I've run the 245's on my cars for years never any problem rubbing. I think the 245 fills out the wheel well nicely. The factory 15" tire was a G60-15. The G60 was 26.4" diameter, the 235 is 26.1", and the 245 is 26.58". Here's my 71. I vote RWL out.
