Well, a year and a half after freshening up the top end my 74 GTO's original engine, I think it's over. I drove to work yesterday and after my normal romp down the highway, I exited only to notice my car had a new note. As I pulled away from the next signal, it became obvious that this was not a new exhaust leak, but I hoped it was a bent push rod or something simple but it just felt like it was something worse. Once I pulled in the parking lot, I grabbed my gearhead coworker and asked him to come outside and render his opinion. Well, he agreed with my assessment and I'm sad to say I have a ROD KNOCK.
What is the point of this long message? I want some advice! I'm thinking about pulling the 350 and setting it aside in lieu of a 400 or possibly a 455. I don't want a drag car, but my 350 ran 14.5's and I would mind being in the high 13's (running pump gas) with the new engine. What kind of compatability problems might I find? Any and all advice will be appreciated.

Hello. Just crusin around here and there. May I make a suggestion if you haven't already done this. Post your question under performance or earlier GTOs or something. Because of the rarity of your year, there are many more readers in these columns to help you. Have a GREAT DAY! Karl.

Goatboy,
The change from a 350 to a 400 or 455 is a simple one. All the parts will interchange from your car.

Just to update you all; I located and bought an uncut 455 short block and have it sitting on an engine stand in the garage. It must wait there until I knock several items off the Honey-Do list. I plan to swap the blocks the most economical way I can: I will rebuild and reuse my #46 heads (with Harlan Sharp 1.5s), my Pertronix-equipped rebuilt distributor, my 068 cam, Performer intake and original Q-Jet. I wonder if I'll notice any difference with the new lower end

Holy Crap Yes!!!
With 100 more Cubic inches the low end torque is going to be unbelievable. Have you verified the compression ratio?

74 GoatBoy, I'll let out a little secret. Put an Edelbrock Performer RPM intake on. How, by also using a scoop from a '73-'76 Trans Am.

I HAVE A 400 IN MY 74 AND AM VERY HAPPY. SO A 455 WILL JUST BE THAT MUCH BETTER. THERE IS A LONG STORY BEHIND MY CAR. BASICALLY HELPED A BUDDY BUILD THE CAR AND WHEN HE AND HIS WIFE SPLIT, I BOUGHT THE CAR TO HELP HIM OUT OF DEBT AND KEEP THE CAR IN GOOD HANDS. THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE WAS THE GEAR. 3.73 POSI (NICE) BUT IF I WERE TO DO IT AGAIN I'D GO WITH 3.55'S. GOOD LUCK WITH YOURS, BUT FROM WATCHING MY BUDDY, MAKE SURE AND DO THE HONEY DO LIST FIRST.
