Sounds like he went by the NADA value guide options.
They have options listed for cars that never existed. You can create a whole new
muscle car using NADA guide options lists. It's weird.

Must have been that late year change over to the 72 parts - you know, when they ran out of stuff and just put on whatever was there.

That's the first thing I noticed too. 72 Fenders.

Oh and he says GTO, but it has Pontiac in the Grill which makes it a lemans.

455? Nice to actually see a pic of the engine, interior, etc, etc, etc, etc..

He's had that car listed for quite a while. His previous ad stated that it was a LeMans that was cloned into a GTO. Funny thing is, he had it listed for $4500, but after having it listed for a year or so, he raised his price to $5000. Not sure of the logic there....

tripower, your mention of the possibility of it being an original 455 72 LeMans has me wondering....hadn't thought of that. Maybe I'll ask him for the VIN....

That's not quite accurate. Their list of items to "add x%" are listed under the whole model year but make little distinction to which models they should be applied.

I contacted the owner, and he doesn't think it's an original 455 car; however, he did say he didn't think a 455 was available in 72, and the 455 was in it when he got it. I asked for the engine code from the VIN, but he said the car wasn't close by so he couldn't check....

That's my point exacty. NADA guides lists options that never existed for these cars which is fine if you're a dealer and know better. For the casual enthusiast, they're making mistakes right, left and center. More than one car dealer is manipulating the NADA guide for their own benefit as well. Why bother listing a sunroof on a Trans Am?
It's sloppy, no real excuses for it.

I'm just saying that "never existed" is somewhat misleading because the options were available - maybe not for a Firebird, but for a GTO.

In order to price a car accurately with that guide, one needs to know what he/she's talking about or it's likely some funny values will be added.
