1970 seat belts
I'm working on a 1970 Formula and want to know if these look like the original front seat belts. Specifically the outboard belt that's in a plastic sleeve. All the pictures I can find show a retractable belt. The label says Irvin model #2910 date 32A70. I know there should also be a shoulder belt that mounts to the roof that was missing. The build date of the car is 06A.

I think so. There are separate lap belts and shoulder belts. Those look just like the ones in my 1970 Formula.

I sold my 70 Formula about 7 - 8 years ago, so I'm going from memory in my earlier post.
What is the difference between late and early Firebird as far as seat belts are concerned? My cowl tag is dated 07C, so it was very late production. |

I believe that seat belts fell under laws pertaining to model year of production, and were essentially certified for a given model year. The lone model year exception was the mid-1972 model year change requiring the seat belt buzzer and drivers side shoulder belt interlock. As such, to the best of my knowledge, the Firebird/Camaro belts go like this: 1) 1970; retractable front lap (male) belts; fixed length (male) shoulder belts; fixed length rear seat (male) belts; adjustable female belts (all) 2) 1971-1972.5; same as 1970 except drivers (male) belt changed to fixed length with sleeve. 3) 1972.5-1973; retractable front lap (male) belts with interlock; fixed length (male) shoulder belts with interlock; retractable rear seat (male) belts; fixed length female belts (all) 4) 1974-(?); retractable front (male) belts with attached shoulder belt; retractable rear seat (male) belts; fixed length female belts (all) I believe the suggestion made yesterday was that a very late 1970 model year car might have had 1971 model year lap belts, but I am not incline to believe this as a possibility.

No , I was suggesting 32nd week of 70 produced belts might have been 1970 belts.
- shooting from the hip But that would be about 08b build week , so probably not. What Sooner does have , would be fine for rear belts in a 70 , after removing the sleeve from male section. Or just the female buckle used up front. Or just run with what he has in hand up front , and let it ride. Mike your 07c would have been about the 29th Week of 1970. in compare Another thing to consider or research , in my GTO junkyard days , Standard Males would not work with Deluxe Females - and vice versa. So double check the Male Chrome section is the right size and shape if just buying a Retractor. The size of the catch hole is usually different also. Again, this is GTO language. But worth verifying |

One for lap, second for shoulder. As I'm sure you know these females store in your console side clips.

Thanks for the response. I thought the belts were original to the car, but the only other 70 cars I've seen had a retractor belt on the outboard side.

I am going to chance contradicting a respected member of this forum;
Those lap belts are 1971 model year belts. The female end is the same for 1970 & 1971, but as mentioned the correct 1970 male belt is a retractor belt. The shoulder belts use the same female belt as the lap, but have a fixed length male belt attached to the roof. I would suggest the complete absence of shoulder belts as a hit that your original belts were removed from your car.

Thanks for the input. I was thinking that may be the case just based on the research I've done. It's really tough to find any original 70 belts to compare them to

oh, if they are the same as 1969 Camaros, you can probably buy them brand new!

I'm not sure if the outer retractor sleeve on these 69's is as long as full correct 1970 , but google search does show New Front sets/pairs for 67-69 F-Body. They would be pretty close., even if not exactly right www.ss396.com show Deluxe Male/Female pair @ $160 (1 seat) www.seatbeltsplus.com show Standard M/F pairs @ $340 (2 seats) but the buckles look like half Deluxe/half Std cross - and the release buttons are starburst - not GM logo Heartbeatcitycamaro shows some Standards that look about right but the buttons aren't blue Looks like a GM release button from a Deluxe buckle $170 per set and Back Ordered Ames may offer them too , but I just checked some quick results that had pictures listed. Appears you need to be extra inquisitive about the buttons on the Standard units. Some just show a blurr , and will be starburst logo. Last edited by Baron Von Zeppelin; 01-26-2023 at 12:18 AM. |

These won't pass critical judging , but they could help finish a car and make it legal to drive.
14 Colors including Bright Blue Plastics and boots come painted to match the webbings. Reman GM Buckles (not exactly early 2nd Gen Standard) with Blue GM buttons $344 = 2 front lap belt sets https://www.seatbeltplanet.com/i-304...waAkbpEALw_wcB Last edited by Baron Von Zeppelin; 01-26-2023 at 12:39 AM. |

I don't remember how the date codes work on seatbelts anymore - Is that the 32nd week of 1970 ? Can't be 32nd day of January |

A = Standard Belt 32nd week of 1970 Your car was built approx 22nd week 1970 Those could be rear belts from back seat of a Buick , as an example. And could work for your rear seat too. |
