According to the various factory option listings (there were 6 for the 69 model year Firebirds) here are the constraints on the HD 55 amp alternator and the internally regulated alternator.

55 HD alternator (682-KB2): optional on 6 cyl engines only (1bbl and 4 bbl) for $15.80 with no other restrictions. no changes until Option discontinued as of april 1st 69 price revisions

55 S/R alternator (688-K96):
...sept 26 68 (pocket accessorizer) - V8 only: any 400 (without AC) $15.80, either 350 without AC $26.33, either 350 with AC $10.53.
...sept 26 68 (large accessorizer) - V8 only: any 400 (with AC) $26.33 or $15.80, any 350 with AC, $10.53 (obviously typos here, also the two lists of same date conflict so who knows)
... dec 1 68 (no change to above)
...jan 1 69 (pocket accessorizer) - V8 only, not available with AC: any 400 $15.80, any 350 $26.33
...mar 17 69 (no change)
...apr 1 69 (price schedule) no longer offered
...sep 18 69 (price schedule) still not offered

The dealer order form (May 13th 69 version) does not show either alternator option), confirming that they were dropped between jan and march 69. However the undated special equipment order form does list both above alternator options. Interestingly it says the six cylinder only 682-KB2 is standard with AC. the S/R alternator option mentions that it includes a 70 amp/hr battery, this is not mentioned elsewhere.

I have 140 odd 69 Firebird PHS's, none of them have the 682-KB2 listed and one has the S/R (688-K96). it is a mid march built 400 HO without AC. It is billed at $15.80 which is correct according to the above mentioned Jan 1 69 price list.

The Sales album (printed before start of the model year shows the 400 option to include a S/R regulator. However, most 69 400's I've seen have an external regulator.

The AMA listing for the 69 Firebird makes no mention of S/R regulators (it lists all engines using 1119515 mechanical point regulator) but does show the following alternator numbers: both 6 cyl engines - 37 amp 1100761 (with AC 55 amp 1100760), both 350's - 37 amp 1100704 (AC 55 amp 1100700), all 400's - 37 amp 1100832 (AC 55amp 1100830).

My PHS specifically shows the 688 option 55 amp and the car was an 03-a data plate delivered March 17th. But could have been swapped out being dealer owned and raced for 2 years they could have swapped it so they could turn on and off the alternator which seems to be a trick almost all the stock eliminator guys were using at the time .

I looked last night for the alt that’s as on it but I couldn’t locate it. Maybe in my race trailer.

Do you have a PHS for that one would be interesting to see no ViN needed.
