Default Oil filter

Anyone have Doug’s round port headers in a 64/65 a body? I am assuming my stash of PF 24s are not gonna fit and I don’t want to take the filter housing off every time I change my filter so what filters are you using? Oil filter adapter is the one I took off the factory 326

Some are using the smaller LS type filters.

The 1042 NAPA/51042 WIX is about 3" wide & 3 1/2" long.

https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/FIL1042

https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/b.../51042/4835458

If you can stand 3.8" long, you can use the K&N HP-1007. with the nut on the end.

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/knn-hp-1007

If you can use the 4.5" length, but just need the smaller 3" width, you can use the NAPA 1522/WIX 51522.

https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/FIL1522

https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/b.../51522/4835826

Here's an oil filter cross reference chart that shows similar filters in other brands.

https://www.oilfilter-crossreference...vert/Wix/51522

The K&N is an HP-2006. But with the nut, it's over 4.75" long.

I use the Baldwin B-39 filters. They are full diameter but shorter than most other variety. They clear my 67-69 Firebird headers where most of the others will not. They are also full-flow, wide open to the filter element, so show the fastest response on the pressure gauge, and are very well made parts.

I would caution against using some of the small filters that are often suggested that fit the Pontiac filter housings. I tried several a few years back and had problems with them. Once I discovered the B-39's we keep half a dozen on the shelf all the time and it's the only filter I use in our Pontiac engines.......Cliff

Have looked for Baldwin filters in my area, after reading that several like 'em. Haven't found anybody that sells 'em around here. So, I just did a search. Can order online & get 'em shipped to me for around $13 each.

Just this week, I discovered that you no longer have to be a business to buy from Grainger. I suppose I'm the last to know. I've passed by the Monroe, LA Grainger location many times, in recent years, thinking that I couldn't buy from them. Have sometimes run across good prices on parts I was looking to buy. But, I'd just pass it off, assuming their policy was still businesses only. The girl at my Grainger said they begin selling to the public about 5 or so years ago.

But, I bought some bolts online & had 'em shipped free to my Grainger store. Just found that I can do the same with a B39 Baldwin filter. My cost will be a few pennies over $9, + tax. That's my cheapest source, that I'm aware of, for Baldwin filters.

Only problem is, the store is about 40 miles away, & we only go there maybe once a month of less. Anyhow, if some of you guys want a Baldwin filter, and don't have a local source that's stocks 'em, your local Grainger store may be a good source for you.

Here's a Grainger store locator, in case you don't know where your nearest store is.

https://www.grainger.com/content/find-branch-location

If you guys know of any big parts store chains that carry Baldwin filters, please post that info.

LF222 is a Hastings number that is made by Baldwin, and is the same quality as per BITOG posts. Hastings cross reference also lists it for the same application.

Maybe you can find a Hastings dealer in your area, or Rock Auto lists it for $4.02

"...I just stumbled onto this and I can clear up any confusion as I'm an engineer at Baldwin's HQ in Kearney Nebraska.

Baldwin and Hastings are one and the same. Exact same innards on cross referenced part #'s. They are made on the same assembly lines and use all of the exact same parts. You guys would be pretty surprised to see all the brands that we make filters for. Lots of OE brands, and quite a few other brands will buy a few PN's from us as well. We make a lot of filters for the big name brands too, like CAT, Purolator, Napa, and plenty others. They go down our line with the same guts as the Baldwin red filters, just get painted and printed to the customer's spec.

So in short Baldwin = Hastings, end of story..."

Here's 3 of those for $7 ea, shipped.

Here's 8 more for $8 ea, shipped.

If you look around a little you can find the B-39's in bulk under $10 each.

Pretty small investment when you consider the cost of one of these engines and the fact that keeping good oil flow to the internals is a pretty big deal.

I'd add here that in all the years I've been doing these engines we got one back. Showed up in the back of a pick-up truck and the owner didn't even call and tell us he was coming. He was obviously a bit "agitated", but things changed very quickly when we took that POS Fram filter off of it and put a real filter on it and the oil pressure returned. That was nearly 10 years ago and I saw the car running at Norwalk a couple times since then and I'll bet he NEVER put another Fram filter on it!.......cLIFF

If you don't mind a non-stock appearance, you can use a long-branch F-body adapter with a 90* filter adapter like I did below for my '66 GTO with Doug's headers. Ignore the oil cooler if you don't want that.

Napa is made by WIX and have been forever, take the first number off of a WIX and the part numbers are exactly the same. I.E. 51258 in WIX, is a NAPA gold 1258.

Baldwin B30 with my d ports/Doug’s/motor plate. Ordered from Application Associates. https://applicationassociates.com/#&panel1-2 3X5 1/8”. About $7 each. I change oil on my fleet so I order all the filters from them.

Default Oil Filter

What would most people say about a 'Purolator" filter that is a cross reference item for all the other filters discussed in this thread ?

FWIW, Baldwin, Casite, and Hastings filters have the same address in Kearney Nebraska. As I read on the BITOG site Baldwin and Hastings, and Casite are the same filters.

Baldwin, is the main line name, and they use Hastings and Casite as their other brands. If you look on their websites they are all the same, except the name at the top. On the Hastings site they list Casite as a sub line.

When I ran my service station/garage in the late 70s, early 80s I used to stock Casite and Hastings oil filters. Later on when Pennzoil started selling filters I stocked Pennzoil, being a branded Pennzoil service station. So it looks like I was selling Baldwin made filters initially.

When Pennzoil went into the filter business I was selling their branded filters manufactured by FRAM. At that time FRAM was still making a good filter, not the trash they are currently selling. Also the branded Pennzoil filters were exceedingly cheap for me to buy as a dealer, and the more you bought, the cheaper the price was.

In the 5 years I had the gas station I never had any problems at all with any filters, customer cars, race cars, all were no problems. Considering the time frame the oil filters were all adequate for the technology at that time.

BTW, at that time there were not the expensive designer oil filters available, what a parts store sold and stocked was what you used. All cellulose paper media, probably came from a single source.

I just read up on Pennzoil filters and who makes them, it seems around 2005-06 they switched from FRAM to Purolator for their source. Makes sense because they now offer a standard filter and a platinum filter that is synthetic media, same as Purolator line does.

Considering that the motor oils of that time were nowhere as sophisticated in their chemistry and additive packages, I really wish I had paid more attention to the Frantz by pass TP filters. It would have saved me money and time, especially in the dirt car engines as they are in a bad environment constantly.

Live and learn...…………

For NAPA & WIX I see 3 different lengths of the 13/16-16 thread small diameter filters.

http://www.wixfilters.com/lookup/Fil...d=4&styleid=10

#1042 is 3.404"

https://www.fleetfilter.com/filter/51042.html

#1522 is 4.525"

https://www.fleetfilter.com/filter/51522.html

#1045 is 4.828"

https://www.fleetfilter.com/filter/51045.html

The Baldwin B7010 is 4 3/32" long.

https://www.grainger.com/product/2LA...!g!82496521317!

The B1432 looks the same to me, but the B7010 has a 12 micron rating, & the B1432 has an 18 micron rating. All this assumes that the specs are accurate & I'm reading them correctly.

https://www.grainger.com/product/BAL...l-Filter-2KYA4

Someone mentioned Purolator. Looks like the L20123 is the long small diameter. Rock Auto is having a closeout sale, They're $1.39 ea.

Looks like the Purolator L20123 has been replaced with the L25288.
