Default K96/688 option as a 55A self-regulating alternator

What’s the number of this alternator 69 Firebird that has
K96/688 option as a 55A self-regulating alternator

I’ve been told a few different numbers from a different normally very knowledgable people but they can’t all be correct.

Noticed blkbird had a question about this way back in 05 for GTO didn’t seem to have been resolved.

What #'s have you heard?
I think only 3 55 amp alternators used in 1969. Only one was for the internal regulated alternator.
(1100830)

1100928
1100830
1100845 or but I think they meant 1100854. That’s when I realized I was gonna need to get a consensus.

I don’t think I have any of these anyway would have to dig through my stuff. But at lest I’d know what to look for you show the 830 on your page as a 63 amp?

830 is a 55 amp alternator internal regulator.
(854 is 61 or 63 amp alternator internal regulator for GP I think)

My 400 has an 832. Had John Pirkle restore it ten years ago. He said the last one he restored was 2002 and were almost nonexistent.

Have a '68 dated "830" 55 amp alt. nice core & for sale if needed. While integrally regulated, the 800's don't have the same rear cases as the "832"s or "902"s

Bill (original driver ) said they may have replaced it with an externally regulated unit that that was common, and my car does have an externally regulated unit in it right now. But would still prefer hats on the PHS obviously.

Guess they had major issues with that alternator that’s why you don’t find many around they got replaced by the dealers.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? I find this post (circled in red) very interesting because it would seem to follow what bill said and my car w low miles (although granted a lot of changes for racing) had an extremely regulated 55a in it. Yet an internally regulated 55a on the PHS While I do also have a 1100830 it certainly makes me wonder now if they were delivered with the externally regulated 55a instead.

That was my post, much of the factory literature says that 400 cars were all to have internally regulated alternators but by experience most of them seem to have been built without them.

Mine shows the 688 55a , car has 15k on it but drag race miles, it was painted at least twice by 1970 w different paint schemes , lettering so hard to know but the original driver/ mechanic said many of the 55a cars were delivered w/o that alternator but a external version, even though it was ordered that way when I asked about the external regulator in it. I also have a correctly dated 1100700 55a ( I believe is the number) for the car that I got with it. But I assumed it was incorrect so I got a 1100830 for it for when I restored it. But I’ve heard stories about those 830s having been superseded / replaced under warranty and or not delivered that way also. I had seen your post before but took me a while to find it.
Doesn’t really matter to me either way I have both now but I still like a good “how did they actually do it “ mystery . The parts books seem to be a little Wiley about the 1100830 number as well. Showing it as a 63 a many places I always wondered what woukd be the motivation for someone changing to an external regulated on a race car VS SI, and some thought maybe it was to shut off the Feild during a run. Stick eliminator guys did a lot of stuff like that . Even creating controllable vacuum leaks and jetting way up to get more CFM I know that was done on my car .

Guess this was pretty common can find guys on the HAMB and class racer who have done the same as well as the turning off the field on the alternator trick too. Stock class racers are very sharp like Smokey yunick was …
