Default distributor 1111952

hi,
Im ignacio and am been reasurching a distibutor i own. The gto guys from the reading say its rare and it was most;y found in fd ra3 cars. Im guessing Ta or formula. but not common in GTO for 1969. Is this true and was later replaced by the 1970. But the interesting thing is that the 1970 also replaced the 1941 ram air iv distibutor according to the GTO guys. With that in mind was the 1111952 a ram air 3 and a ram air 4 distibutor since the 1970 replaced the 1952 and the 1941? yes Im confused a little.

Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe:
69 FB 400-HO & RAIII M/T is 1111952
69 FB 400-HO & RAIII A/T is 1111946
69 FB RAIV is 1111941

Not as familiar with GTO numbers but I do recall the 1111970 was used on the RAIII

For 1969 Firebird/Trans AM 1111952 was used on manual trans WZ 330 HP engine and WQ 335 HP RAIII manual trans engines. It had the hardened drive gear for the 60 PSI oil pump and high tension distributer points. However I have heard the 941 RAIV dist. was substituted for the 952 on some RAIII man engines. I have one on my manual 69 TA RAIII as rebuilt by Paul Spotts. 952 was also used RAIII GTO/Tempest WT and WS manual trans engines as well as Gran Prix WL (428), WJ (428) and 400 WD and WF engines.

Hey 'nacho wanna REALLLY close distributor for pennies on the dollar of the 70-RAIII/AT distributor?

Get a '2008 - odds are it would pass by most people for a '2009

Joking, but not joking.

Ok, seriously though;
According to my trusty MPC (Dec 1974 printing);
'952 = 1969 400 V-8 Engine ST - Exc. RAM AIR
'940 = 1969 400/2BC/V-8 Engine TH
'946 = 1969 400/4BC/V-8 Engine TH
'941 = 1969 RAM AIR IV

now in MPC lingo:
"ST" stands for "syncromesh transmission" - we would say "manual transmission" these days;
"TH" stands for "turbo hydramatic" - we would say "three speed auto" or "turbo 400" these days.
"RAM AIR" for 1969 & 1970 this typically was used to reference the RAIV (if you keep that in mind, other sections which do not refer to the RAIII will make that much more sense.)

First off, some 1969 stuff confuses me - in part because at the beginning of the year the engine we refer to as the RAIII was moreover known as the 400HO in some material;
My interpretation is that the '952 was used for all 1969 (Firebird) 400's, both 2bbl & 4bbl, RAIII and lesser - as long as it had a manual transmission;
The '941 was for the RAIV regaurdless of transmission.
That leaves the '946 as being for 400/4bbl, "400HO", and RAIII as long as it had an automatic transmission.

When I got my car, it still wasn't too unusual for someone to go to a parts counter either at GM or something else, and do an exchange for a carburetor or distributor for a rebuilt one - so if that's the distributor you have, it would be quite conceivable that this was the one your dad(?) exchanged the original for.

I think Ramairnacho referred to the 1969 #1111970 distributor, not 1970 year distributor.

Itīs been dicussed in his other 1111952 thread.

https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...d.php?t=857848

I have gathered some information about the usage of these distributors.

Love the "MPC Quoters". Will either of you two ever learn that MPCs only note what is available at a certain time as SERViCE PARTS?

For the umpteenth time, there is how an engine (or vehicle) was originally built, then months to years later there are SR's, which only note a consolidation or substitution.

In this case, the MPCīs still seems to agree well with the info from the 1969 Pontiac Service Manual, AMA Specification, Delco Remy, GTOAA and Eric White.
Of course, anything could happen, but one has to rely on something.

And, i look forward to your compilation on the subject as i understand few if anyone has your experience on what goes where in these cars.

I did not see the other discussion.

I had guessed that the '952, was what he got with the car, and that the next logical step was to look for a 70-2009 for his car.

@ OPH:
In the case of distributors, the book does show original equipment, as well as the replacement part from the time of printing.
I paid no attention to the superceded parts.

Please go to the "dueling" topic that Nacho has going, https://forums.maxperformanceinc.com...d.php?t=857848
& read the last few sentences of post #3, all of post #9, & all of post #12.

Master Parts Books notations of what is correct for 1969 model production 400 engines is NOT spot on with how original engines were actually factory assembled. This was ESP the case with early to mid 69 model usage 400 man trans & early 400 HO/RA3 engines.

First notated this in the early 90's from quite a few very collectible original cars & loose original engines pulled from numerous very original drivetrain cars.

From the AMA specs, here we can see that #1111970 replaced the #1111941 at date 12-12-68.
At least for 1969 GTOīs.
