Pitman Arm Fitment
Hello all,
While wrapping up alignment and centering of my steering box and steering wheel, I noted something I thought should be checked. I can't be certain but it appears that the pitman arm may have been removed/replaced or serviced at some point. I wanted to ask if anyone would be able to tell me if the splined shaft coming out of the power steering box is tapered or if it's square/straight cut. I ask because there seems to be some space between the surface of the pitman arm and the steering box where I can see some of the spline. The pitman arm is not up tight or very close to the steering box. Is this normal? All I've been able to find so far is a torque setting for the nut holding the pitman arm. I hope I'm not troubleshooting something that doesn't need attention. Thanks

All mine are like that too. I’d guess they are tapered but can’t be certain .

They are indeed tapered.

Definitely tapered.
If it wasn’t tapered the pitman arm itself would have a pinch bolt to secure it tight to the shaft instead of a nut on the end of the shaft.

Yep, they're tapered and what you're seeing is normal.
