1976 Trans Am with 455. Same, that vacuum became an issue as well as not happy with OEM set up (not against OEM, but this was for my preference). I was also running a vacuum pump to help. In the winter of 2018 I decided to go to a larger front disc, and to convert my rear drums to disc. All Wilwood. After speaking with the Wilwood tech they were not comfortable with the safety of the brakes using the vacuum pump. They suggested I convert to a hydroboost and pointed me to Vintage Speed Reaper in Michigan (not sure of they are still there), but there are other places and some even go to the scrap yard to build there own set-up. At the time Vintage Reaper was also a distributer (or something like that??) for Wilwood, so I bought their hydroboost kit that came assembled with a Wilwood Master and proportioning valve (that was sized for my application), and a CNC base that matches the four bolt mounting location through the firewall. Relatively easy install and excellent installation instructions. Five summers later and I am still absolutely happy. Incredible brake performance; huge improvement. The only suggestion I would have is to swap out the braided lines the kit comes with, for lines and crimped fitting from a professional hydraulics shop. The ones I received had fittings the home mechanic (me) has to put together, and eventually blew off making a huge mess. The professional ones solved the problem. Not that everyone would have the same problem.

Manual will work fine here - even with no vacuum.

Is the disc factor making that big of a difference? Just put a booster on the fuelie this weekend as the manual drums where borderline dangerous in traffic.

ugh
u dont need hydro or nascar wilwood etc etc quality manual brakes are excellent. master power brakes. I chuckle when I see brembo mumbo jumbo brakes on street cars as hobby cars. their designed for slammin on the brakes and jerking the steering wheel in a hairpin turn on race tracks. same with all the mumbo jumbo suspension mods and rubber band tires. |
