Default 1966 gto vin decoding

A friend of mine has a 66 gto (hardtop) with the VIN number starting with 242176P.

I went on a few vin decoding web pages, and I can read 67 is convertible, 17 is 2 door hardtop, and 37 is hardtop sport coupe. What is up with that ? What is the difference between a "17" and a "37" car ?

Not familiar with A-bodies, more of a early Firebird guy.

Some of those thrown-together sites are a bit convoluted, to say the least.
There is no "37" body style number for the GTO platform.

"37" is a B-Body number in '66

See complete Body Style Numbers below;

These body styles are for GTO.

1964-65 are body styles 67 (convertible), 37 (hardtop coupe) and 27 (sport coupe).
1966-67 are body styles 67 (convertible), 17 (hardtop coupe) and 07 (sport coupe).
1968-71 are body styles 67 (convertible) and 37 (hardtop coupe).
1972 are body styles 37 (hardtop coupe) and 27 (coupe).
1973 are body styles F37 (sport coupe 37) and D37 (coupe 27).
1974 are body styles Y/Z27 (coupe) and Y/Z17 (hatchback coupe).

It's not the numbers, it's the description he's asking about. It's like the confusion generated by coupe and sedan. 'Cause they can't *both* be hardtops. "Sport coupe" is just GM's way of saying POST. Basically, 17 uses frameless windows (like the first gen 'Birds). Drop all the windows and there's a large opening that isn't broken up by anything.

This prototype is clearly a different body style than production Judges.

I always liked that picture.

It has 2 hood tachs, I guess so your passenger can when you hit the redline too.
