I think finding that person restoring a 78 in need of all that is going to be a pretty low number of folks. Either a previous owner did a motor swap and tossed the smogger or blew it up.
I ordered my 78 right after they quit putting a W72 in with an auto About 20 years ago found a intake to pan X7-same guy I bought a 73 SD intake from. So if I ever want to put mine how I originally wanted it I can. It is also painted black so who knows what is on the inside but an XX block and 6X-4 heads and X7 stamp. For about $500

regardless of if he finds someone wanting to restore a W72 car, the block has more value than a run of the mill mid 70s 500557 block simply because its a 481988 early 70's casting thats the more desirable block to use for any type of higher hp or stroker builds. i have sold common 481988 blocks for $400-500 & see them for sale all the time for about that price, just a bare block or maybe with a crank. anyone thinking a XX 481988 complete engine is only worth $500 or $600 is way off base on what these engines are worth today. there may be some good deals out there to be found still but for the most part in 2023 you arent going to find a XX complete engine for that price.
& a fresh rebuild complete XX engine is easily worth $1500 for just the long block, theres people paying $2500+ for a basic rebuild on these engines today! then the few parts i mentioned are worth another ~$1000. so the value is there, just look at ebay, craigslist or FB or even forums like this, guys are selling big car no special stamp 455 blocks for $800-$1000 & 481988 or earlier late 60's 400s blocks for $500+. the w72 blocks i have sold all went for $500 or more & they sold in a few weeks. |

I do have a W72 400 dated 1978 . It is a CA motor. Currently is in my 1971 Formula. WC is the code. I am in the process of building a 1971 YS 400 motor. The motor will be available after I complete the 71 YS motor.

Do you have a timeline, will it be a running motor, and whereabouts are you located? I guess I should ask cost also...
