Purpose of this piece
The piece shown in the pics below is described as a “retainer” in the 66 A/C manual. Can anybody elaborate on exactly what this piece is supposed to do? It fits into a hole in the firewall and has several tabs that are then bent over the edge of the hole to make contact with the rear surface of the firewall. What is it supposed to “retain”?

It's my understanding It was to help keep the interior Firewall pad in place (RETAINED) and not fall/drop over the passthrough.

You bend the tabs over the edge of the opening. The long tabs press against the firewall insulation cemented above and prevent the insulation from being sucked into the blower box and blocking the opening.

Firewall pad retainer! Duh, how could I not figure that out? Many thanks for this info.
