I had 400 hp in one of those for 10 years in my 77 stock block….held up just fine….I wouldn’t go much more than that though…..

I went with a 70 4 bolt main for my current 675 hp stroker

It was just some out of the box 72cc eheads/ flat top pistons forged rods and a performer RPM cam flat tapped and intake. Didn’t spin it past 6k

That block will get you to your hp goal, but those heads will need to get milled a whole bunch and have some very good porting done to them.

For your hp goals I would go for the 16 castings provide they have screw in rocker studs from the factory and that they also have not been milled any more then .005”.
Your next choice would be the 62 casting.

The 31 is as good a pick as the 16s and the same milling rule applies .

If you do not own these 31 castings already just note that since they are rare ram air heads they will cost a ton more .

Or get a mini pop up piston to get the compression up. My 78 TA 6X-8s were 98cc. The 400 short block I hammered on for years with my RAIV heads was about 400 HP and a 557.
