Default Front Cowl Flap Not Closing - AC

Guys, the front cowl flap does not close all the way when the AC is on Max. In fact it does not close on any setting, just opens all the way. Anyone fix something like this. Thanks!

It's vacuum operated. It could have come unhooked or could be a hole in the rubber diaphragm. Easy to unbolt the door and have a look from that end, see if hooked up or holds vacuum pressure before looking under the dash and kick panel area.

Apparently it is working somewhat, since you say it just doesn't close all the way, but does open all the way. So it looks like the vacuum actuator is working. You may be able to adjust the door to close all the way. There is a screw in an elongated hole for adjustment of the throw. Here's a pic of it: DSCN3268 - Copy by grand73am, on Flickr

You're welcome. Just take pictures when taking it out and taking it apart, so you won't forget how it goes back. When you remove it, you'll also find a separate "divider" panel underneath that door, inside the cowl plenum. It's a metal panel with a foam rubber pad on it. It seals the passenger side of the plenum from the driver side, so that when the door is closed, you basically have a closed box on the passenger side. The door closes when you set your control panel on MAX. You will be recirculating air from the passenger side of the plenum only, with basically no outside air, since the open driver side is closed off from the passenger side. Since you're recirculating the interior cooled air to be cooled again, instead of cooling warmer outside air, you get the maximum cooling when set on MAX which closes the door.

Seems like I know why my door was not closing. The arm that attaches to the door has no clip on it so it was almost falling off, was not centered on lever mechanism if that makes sense. In the pic I centered it but when I took it off the car it was nearly off the edge.

It shouldn't need a clip to stay on the rod. I've done 2 of those assemblies, and neither one has a clip. Wouldn't hurt if you added one if necessary though.

I bought a roll of the foam rubber mat in the link below. It worked great for replacing the rubber on that panel. The original rubber will have shrunk somewhat from its original size over time. So, cut the new rubber a little larger so it will seal better all around the hole in the cowl.

I also used that sponge rubber to make a new steering column to firewall gasket. Also, for the wiper motor to cowl seal.

Thanks Steve. I appreciate the help. I will have my foam by Friday. FYI. If you have never tried this rust remover, you may want to look it up. Amazing stuff.

I could swear at least with the motor off I've never seen one completely shut.

Are you going to paint that or send it of for yellow/gold cad plating?

With the motor off there is no vacuum to hold it shut.
