Default Trailer value

What would be a fair price for a twenty+ year old 18' open car trailer, all metal construction. Theses are the only pictures I have of it right now but can get more if need be.
It belonged to my best friend who passed away recently and his wife wants to know if I want it. I do, but need to make her a fair offer.

I have one similar that I’ve decided to sell. It’s an older trailer but well made. I was going to ask $2K for it. They aren’t that easy to find used in decent condition. Maybe as a friend you would offer a little less, depends on the local market

Prices are up on everything. A friend bought a similar trailer a few months ago for $1500 with fairly new tires. It wouldn't hurt to start out at $2K and see if there is any interest. I think the trailer my friend bought was advertised for $1800, the seller dropped his price after it sat unsold for several weeks.

Default Trailer prices are crazy out here - especially if they're not all beat up.

I concur that $2k would be a fair 'buddy' price. It would probably sell here in Las Vegas for $2500, if you listed it.

Good luck!

Not that hard to watch Craigslist & local Fakebook mktplace & see what's out there.
Prices on new trailers has gone through the roof. quality used open car trailers & utility trailers are also selling for a LOT more than 2 years ago, just what I've seen.

When they had the estate auction here at my new house, there were 2 car trailers, and one equipment trailer and a single axle utility trailer. Those 4 trailers brought over 11 grand all total so in the 2 grand area is a fair price.

Steel cost, and labor on new trailers has brought up the price of used good condition trailers a good bit. Same as lack of new cars/trucks, and late model used, has went up due to scarcity of units.

I agree with others. $2k is definitely a fair price.

Tire condition would effect the price. If they are the same age as trailer I wouldn't do anymore than $1200.

^^^How does that add up? Are tires $200/ea? It's his best friend's widow!!!

My intial reaction was $2,000. But it looks like it has nice wheels, D-rings, possibly a storage box. This is worth $2,500 easy. Especially if it has a steel deck. If it has a wood deck, that is in poor shape, the price would come down a bit. I assume it has ramps?

Not unusual to be slightly over $200 each, plus mounting and balancing.

That price is mounted on a rim. More like $125 for a tire. Still ridiculous suggesting that this trailer is worth $1,200.

Usually when they need tires and brakes, they come up for sale...

That is a good point about tires on a used trailer. If I'm buying, and it needs tires, that's a major expense that needs to be considered in what you pay, or offer.

New tires definitely increase the worth of a used trailer. Most times your not going to pull a wheel off to assess the life left in the brakes, In most cases I just assume that brakes are needed, or will be needed shortly.

Upon buying a used trailer I remove wheels and at the very least wash out the wheel bearings, repack/replace them, and assess the brakes. I also check, and fix the lights, and wiring immediately.

Nothing irritates me more than following a trailer with no working lights on it. Pretty common on older trailers to have only one, or no lights working around my neck of the woods. I usually spring for LED replacement kits on my trailers, standard filament bulbs go out due to the vibration, plus the LEDs are much brighter. I then also see if entire new wiring needs run and use either the molded loom wires, or run sheathed electrical cord to the rear of the trailer.

I also have a set of the magnetic temporary lights to use if I'm pulling a trailer with inoperative/missing lights.

Judging by those pictures it needs 4 new tires. Trailers normally sit outside and the sun breaks down the rubber. Trailer tires in my opinion should be changed every 6 years max no mater what the tread life is. Sooner if they exhibit cracking or other flaws. Also check the wood deck for any soft spots. The wood looks rather dark.
1) Count on new tires and while they are off it makes sense to do new bearings (I have found its usually cheaper and more coinvent to get he pre-mounted tire on rim. )
2) Do the brakes work?
3) Do all the lights work?
4) Any underside issues with rust or wiring?

It appears the trailer market has gone nuts with everything else. Pre pandemic I would say that's a $1500 trailer. In todays market probably $2000.

Landscapers need a reliable long and short trailer to run and build cash. Car guys not so much.

$2000 is a good price if everything is ready to go,tires, brakes, lights. Other wise $1500. Are they 15" wheels, any dry rotting on the tires, check their dates, ozone wreaks havoc. I had a tire blow out on the turnpike and it was an eye opener so I watch them closely now.

2K is a good price for that.

I've seen similar used trailers lately priced at $3,000+ in SoCal. Totally ridiculous out here and the inflated prices will be spreading to your areas. I have been looking for new dump trailers and they were priced at $3,200 six months ago and are now $6,800 and above.

I sold my enclosed trailer 8 months ago and did okay on it, but today I could have got double what I did because of the demand with people moving out of here.

Looks like a decent trailer. I wouldn't take anything less than $2500...
