Default The saga continues.........electrical assistance needed

Upon removing my dash in my 69 GTO for possible ground / gauge issues, I discovered the green wire from the A/C control is melted and the dry / corroded bare wire exposed. (1st picture)

Any Idea why that happened?

I looked into my trusty bin of electical odds and ends....found a A/C wire harness, I noticed the pigtail for the blower that runs to the relay on firewall (black with orange strip) is spliced (2nd picture) with a wire that goes to a gray connector that plugs into some type of resistor on the case for A/C.

Before I attempt to install this harness I would like to know...

Is that correct or did someone do a hack-a-harness job?

Thanks.....

That's correct, the splice is for low speed blower.

The main lead is for high speed from the fan switch inside.

The gray connector does go to the fan resistor for different fan speeds.
