Motor plate question
I have a car with a 1/4" front motor plate and a CSR water pump. The motor plate is between the timing cover and the water pump.
I'm about to swap in an engine that had a 1/4" motor plate between the block and the timing cover. And I'm going to use a Meziere water pump. Is one way better than the other? Do both mounting styles use the same timing cover? And will I need spacers when using the Meziere water pump? Thanks. |

Mine is between the block and timing cover, I like that better then the other!

I agree. Looks like it would be easier to mount a vacuum pump, alternator and crank trigger with the motor plate between the block and timing cover.

Anyone have pics of a vacuum pump setup on a front plate between the timing cover and the water pump?
Or do I remove a large section of motor plate and mount the vacuum pump to the head? |

i have two cars one with the plate behind the timing cover the other with the plate infront. Both of my vacuum pumps are set up off the passenger side head. Both work fine.
I think the plate behind the pump is a little cleaner, but it also makes it a little harder to get the motor out with the front plate still on. Also if something ''happened'' to the milled timing cover i would have to get another machined. I have 6 stock timing covers ready to go for the other one. pick one you like the best and fits your chassis best, don't over think it.

I like the plate mounted to the block.

Thanks for the help and the pic.
I decided to switch to an All Pontiac motor plate. My other car has one, and that way I can easily swap engines between cars if I want to. |

So when does one have to start thinking about a motor plate? I'm building a 505 which should do about 750 hp. Going in a 68 Firebird. I already have mighty mounts with a tie down plate off driver side head to frame. It's a full plate mounted across head. Turn buckle style tie down. The plate is 3/16 steel mounted under accessories. I was thinking front only motor plate with the same motor mounts.
Need opinions please. Thanks Charles |

So when switching to a motor plate between the timing cover and the block, how do you address the timing cover to the oil pan lip?

The timing cover is machined for clearance the thickness of the motor plate. Everything lines up that way

Isn’t it better to install on front of the timing cover?

Ok. So engine plate on front,Solid motor mounts. That ok?
No mid plate. ? Charles |

Yes, gaskets on both sides.
No more need for engine mounts, I have a travel limiter bolted to engine mount bolt hole that goes to frame and use rubber mount on the trans.

With a front plate I believe you want either a midplate (with a travel limiter) or retain the stock mounts. Not saying it won’t work but there was a thread recently on YB and that was the consensus.

If you have to pick which one will take the stress off the block, then mid plate will do that. Ideally mid plate, front plate and travel limiter is the best set up.

Before pic: With the aluminum plate in front of the water pump.
After pic: With the All Pontiac plate. I like the cleaner look of the AP plate. I took the AP plate to a local metal shop and had it bent to fit the same mounts the aluminum plate used. |

I've always read this about a travel limiter, but, FWIW, I run just the mid and front plates, no limiter and I've had no issues. Incidentally, I believe with front and mid-plate, you should run a poly rear trans mount---not solid. Jim
