Hey thanks Jay! I was going to buy those Howard’s springs to start with. Didn’t trust myself so I figured Butlers would get me what I needed and I’d get everything at once . Oh well.

You guys ready for the snow? We’re spose to get 4-6 inches.

Hope you have a good year ahead!

In the old days Jim Butler used to push a lot of Lunati valve springs.

25 degrees coming up down here in Central Texas.

Can't help you with the springs but since someone brought up the weather....

Here's what it's been like for the last week around here. Going to warm up into the mid 30s-low 40s for the next week so this stuff will start melting off, but slowly.

You can do some math... you can calculate the max. valve lift for some springs by:

installed height - coil bind height - 0.050"

In the case of the Edelbrock 5845 this would be:

1.800" - 1.150" - 0.050" = 0.600"

You see, 0.610" is too much for these springs... with 1.5 rockers it should be fine, but with 1.7 rockers I wouldn't take the risk.

Yes, I agree Chris. I won’t be using them.

Thanks

Well, I said I’d post Butlers reply so here goes.

“We measure actual coil bind to be 1.130 with the retainers we use. When installed at 1.800 this would give .055” minimum, of course you then add pushrod deflection and loss of lift from the hyd lifter to that. We work off of .050” as a safe minimum in hyd roller applications.
But we do have a spring that also installs at 1.800 like the Edelbrock springs and is even further from coil bind. If you’d like to return those we’ll gladly trade them out with you.”

I then had a couple springs checked and they were just as he said #150 @ 1.800 and #425 @ 1.185 with coil bind at 1.130.

I replied asking about the open pressure & got this reply.

“Yes sir! With the relatively heavy valve train of a Pontiac (as compared to something like an LS) we like higher spring pressure like that. We really like that Edelbrock spring if it works for you.”

So, any thoughts? At this point, I think I’ll go with them.

Thanks to all.
Murf

What brand 1.65 rockers will you be using?

Related....

Curiosity led us to bench-test 20 different 38-inch stud-mount rocker arms on a small-block Chevy. All of them were advertised as having a 1.6:1 ratio—and exactly one of them multiplied the lobe lift of the cam to the valve accordingly.
In fact, we witnessed ratios as high as 1.668:1 when rotating the engine over with one rocker in place, and the rest were about 1.650:1.

PaulK, Thanks for your reply! I think that’s what I’ll do.

Steve25, They are Crower 1.7 aluminum rollers.

SteveC, Thanks for the link. Good info. So to know the whole story, you really have to set up the the whole deal and check everything. With a hydraulic lifter how does one account for lifter travel when checking spring clearance?

Thanks all!
Murf

Damn I forgot to call my guy. I know he likes a lighter valve train.

Someone at Bulter sure likes too set up people with those eddy 5845 springs. 5845’s seem to be Butlers go to one size fits all spring.

I know this thread is done, but I did a search and noticed I had a number wrong. Just going to clarify incase this post comes up in someone’s search.

Second paragraph the 26918 was suppose to read 26925. 26925 is the ‘very nice spring’ that is not a beehive. 26918 is the beehive.
